I live in a city where 80% of people hate Flock cameras because they like doing petty crimes and the other 20% would call the cops on you for leaving your trash cans on the curb 5 minutes after the garbage truck came.

The study only found an association for *changes* in tree canopy, not baseline rates. Poor neighborhoods (ie those with the highest mortality rates) have around twice as many trees as rich neighborhoods. So trees don't affect mortality, but planting trees does? Something else is going on here.

But I get a little frustrated when people are like "see, this proves all the other Dems could be Just Doing Stuff" and that's not the case. For many, many other offices Doing Fucking Anything requires navigating both a ton of veto points held by special interests and farcically constrained budgets

this is a profound misreading of what i said here. which is that if you want to build new housing WITHOUT gentrification, you build it in places where rich people already live while providing amenities in places where low-income people live

A major housing bill that would discourage building rental homes “reflects a peculiar type of American populism that combines a right-wing fetish for suburbia’s homeowner society with a left-wing distrust of investment capital,” Henry Grabar argues.

Even more evidence that building new housing decreases rents: Researchers tracked the residents of a newly built luxury condo building and found that they freed up less expensive apartments nearby. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Using detailed address-level microdata, we trace movement chains originating with
the initial residents of The Central and document three main findings. First, we show
the building generated a substantial number of local vacancies. We identify 180 specific
addresses that became vacant because of moves into The Central. Scaling to account
for data coverage suggests the new tower induced more than 500 local vacancies in
the three years after construction, by setting off chains of moves. Second, while The
Central units were expensive on a per-square-foot basis, the homes vacated by movers
were significantly cheaper. Homes left behind by those moving into The Central were
about 40% less expensive. Unlike much of the prior literature, which track the changing
neighborhood characteristics of movers

Commissioners who hate the land use plan and think it should be tied to sewer … that’s exactly what it does. It restricts density to places where there’s sewer. Let‘s be real here, they really just hate apartments. Problem is, it’s incredibly expensive to run sewer to single family neighborhoods.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)
