I am pleased with this evolution of our energy policy. Renewables remain our top priority. This isn’t about fast-tracking new nuclear, but about recognising that in a climate emergency we should be using all the existing infrastructure we have to move off fossil fuels.

An event with several people seated. Around 70% of the chairs are empty. To the side is a large trans flag held by protesters. And to the front a large TV screen with a woman giving a presentation.

Wes Streeting agreeing with Donald Trump on the front page of the Sunday Telegraph
Streeting: Trump right to demand Britain spend more on defence
The Sunday Telegraph4 Oct 2026By Rozina Sabur NATIONAL SECURITY EDITOR in Iceland

Wes Streeting and Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland’s minister for foreign affairs
DONALD TRUMP is “absolutely right” to demand more of the UK on defence spending, Wes Streeting has said.

The Defence Secretary said Britain must be war-fighting ready by 2030 after Nato warned that Russia could strike a member of the transatlantic alliance by that date.

In an interview with The Telegraph after a summit of defence ministers in Keflavik, Iceland, Mr Streeting said: “We want to be deterring Russia, and we want to make sure that if deterrence fails, we’re ready to defeat our enemies.

“It’s why the Nato alliance is absolutely critical. Nato-first is our policy, but also it’s why I’ve been really keen to make clear to our friends in the United States of America that, as far as we’re concerned, President Trump and his administration have been absolutely right to demand more of the UK, more of Europe. We’ve got to step up and carry more of the responsibility for defending our own continent.”

He made the comments in the lead-up to the first Budget of Andy

Burnham’s premiership, with Labour MPs split over calls to cut the soaring welfare bill to find the money to boost defence.

John Healey, the Chancellor, has refused to chart a path to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030 despite resigning as Defence Secretary over the issue during Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership.

Mr Healey has signalled he will fully fund the Government’s defence investment plan in the upcoming Budget, but deferred outlining a pathway to 3 per cent to the 2027 spending review.

Despite that, Mr Streeting, his successor at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), insisted that Labour was “well on our way” to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence.

He said: “Bear in mind that when Labour came in, we were at 2.3 per cent. By next year, we’ll be at 2.7 per ce…

I’ve emailed Andy Burnham and Bridget Phillipson with a name change suggestion for next year's conference.
"Dear Ms Phillipson and Prime Minister Burnham,

I understand that Labour’s National Annual Women’s Conference took place in Liverpool on 26 September, with reports suggesting that attendance was somewhere around 200 women, compared with roughly 1,000 in previous years.

Given that rather spectacular reduction, I have a modest suggestion for next year.

Perhaps the event could be renamed the Labour Party (Handful of) Women’s Conference.

It would certainly be more accurate, and it might save on printing costs.

Of course, there is a more serious point underneath the joke. When a women’s conference loses the vast majority of its attendees, perhaps it is worth asking why so many women decided they no longer wanted to be there.

If Labour genuinely wants to represent women, it might be worth listening to the women who stayed away.

Yours sincerely,"

The Supreme Court has responded to the complaint we have raised alongside @translucent.org.uk and @transparentaction.bsky.social and, as expected, they have failed to address the concerns we have raised...
"Dear Trans Advocacy & Complaints Collective, Transparent Action, and
TransLucent
Thank you for your complaint about the Court's new exhibition. I understand
your concern to be that the presentation of For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish
Ministers appears to be weighted towards the perspective of those who
campaigned for and celebrated the outcome, while giving insufficient
recognition to those who opposed it. You have confirmed that you are not
challenging the judgment itself or the inclusion of the case in the exhibition.
As Head of External Affairs and Communications, with responsibility for the
exhibition, I have been asked to respond to the matters you have raised. It may
be helpful first to explain the exhibition's purpose and approach.
The Law and Us features 70 appeals heard by the Supreme Court, the Judicial
Committee of the Privy Council and the Appellate Committee of the House of
Lords, the predecessor to the Supreme Court. The cases cover a wide range of
legal issues and were selected to illustrate both the breadth of the Court's work
and the ways in which the law affects people's lives. The exhibition also explains
the creation of the Court, the development of law in the UK and the role of the
Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers is one of the 70 featured appeals.
As with the other case studies, it explains the background to the dispute, the""legal questions considered, the Justices' decision and a subsequent reflection
from a Justice or another person connected with the law. Images relating to the
appeal or its wider context were selected to help visitors understand the issues.
...You suggest that the headline, "When the law says 'woman', what does it mean?"
could imply that the Court went further than the judgment itself. The headline
refers expressly to the meaning of terms used in law. The question before the
Court concerned the meaning of "woman" and "sex" in a specific piece of
legislation. This is made clear in the case study under the paragraph heading
"The heart of the case". The display does not suggest that the Court provided a
general definition outside of the legislation it was considering.
Regarding your concerns about the images used - which you say "reflects the
perspective of those who celebrated the judgment" while largely ignoring those who
did not - the display features an image of the Scottish Government alongside that
of For Women Scotland, thus representing both parties in the appeal. This is
consistent with the approach taken across the exhibition. Their purpose is to
illustrate the case and its context, rather than to represent every individual or
organisation with an interest in the wider debate. The inclusion of any image
does not signify the Court's endorsement of any person or organisation
depicted. We did not visually represent the interveners; however, details of them
as well as the judgment, are available on the Court's website, along with the
recordings of the hearing and written_legalarguments.
Lady Rose's contribution is a personal reflection on the atmosphere in
Courtroom 1 when the judgment was handed down. It does not endorse a
particular position or present the outcome as a cause for celebration. The
exhibition also states that, when handing down the judgment, the Court
emphasised that trans people remain protected from discrimination under the
Equality Act 2010..""private room, and seats were not allocated according to the position an
individual supported in either case.
I have carefully considered the matters you have raised, examining the wording,
images, personal reflection and contextual material in the exhibition. I am
satisfied that the display accurately explains the issue before the Court, the
judgment and its legal context, and is consistent with the approach taken across
the exhibition. I am also satisfied that the arrangements for members of the
public who attended the judgment hand-down were professional, impartial and
transparent.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling or outcome of your complaint, you may
request a review within 14 days in accordance with the Administrative
Complaints Policy, details of which are available on the Court's website.
Yours sincerely

I have written to @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social to ask some important questions relating to her appearance and comments on The Daily T's Sunday Showdown, where she stated she was "a woman, defined by my biology", and that a women’s refuge should be for those of us who are “biologically women"
"... When asked whether you would have allowed a trans woman fleeing domestic abuse into the women’s refuge you once managed, you answered: “No.”

You said that alternative provision could be made, and that a women’s refuge should be for those of us who are “biologically women”.

That deserves considerably more scrutiny than another political soundbite.

You have chosen to justify your position by appealing to biology, so I would like you to explain what you mean by that claim in biological terms, rather than simply referring back to the law, the Supreme Court or the EHRC.

What, biologically, is a woman?

The scientific picture is considerably more complicated than the neat binary your statement suggests. Sex-related biology involves multiple characteristics, including chromosomes, gonads, reproductive anatomy, hormones and secondary sex characteristics. These characteristics do not always align in the stereotypical way, which is why medicine recognises differences of sex development. Contemporary scientific literature describes sex-related biology as involving multiple interacting characteristics rather than one single biological test that can infallibly sort every human being into one of two boxes.

You already know this. Biologists, doctors and other experts sent you an open letter specifically explaining these issues. They warned that reducing human sex biology to an immutable binary is an oversimplification and that policy built upon that oversimplification can cause real harm.

That does not mean biological sex is meaningless. It obviously is not. Female and male reproductive biology are real and medically important. But acknowledging that doesn't require pretending every human body is a perfectly standard biological specimen.

So let us get away from slogans.

You say that you are a woman “defined by my biology”. You say that I am not.

What, precisely, is the biological distinction you are making?""...And how would you establish it?

Would you take my blood? Sequence my chromosomes? Examine my gonads? Inspect my anatomy? Measure my hormones? Demand medical records?

Because the moment “biologically a woman” has to become a real-world test rather than a political phrase, the simplicity disappears.

And nowhere is that more obvious than in the refuge you once managed.

Imagine a woman arriving at the door after fleeing an abusive partner. She is terrified. She has no passport, no birth certificate and no medical records. She may have left everything behind to get herself and her children somewhere safe.

You have said the refuge should be for women who are “biologically women”.

So how does the refuge establish that?

Does she need to prove her chromosomes before being allowed through the door? Does somebody examine her body? Does she have to produce evidence of her reproductive anatomy? Or does a member of staff simply look at her and decide whether she appears sufficiently female?

Because the last option is not biology.

It is gender policing.

And then comes the question you cannot escape: how would you identify a trans woman without simply assuming that she is trans?

You cannot see somebody's chromosomes. You cannot see their gonads. You cannot see their hormone levels. You cannot see their developmental history.

If your answer is appearance, you have created a system in which women can be challenged because they are too masculine, too tall, too muscular, too deep-voiced, too gender-nonconforming or do not conform to somebody else's idea of what a woman is supposed to look like.

That is not a minor administrative problem. It is the policing of women's bodies, dressed up as biological certainty.

And feminism should recognise that for what it is....""...Sex and gender are related, but they're not interchangeable concepts. Sex encompasses biological characteristics and processes; gender also encompasses the social and personal dimensions through which human beings understand and live their gender. The scientific literature itself recognises that these concepts interact in complex ways rather than functioning as two completely separate boxes.
...You have experience running a women's refuge. You know what a woman arriving at that door needs. She does not need a politician's abstract definition of womanhood. She needs safety.

So I am asking you, as Minister for Women and Equalities, to answer some very straightforward questions.

What biological characteristics make you a woman and make me not one?

How would you establish that distinction in practice?

How does your definition account for women with differences of sex development?

What happens to women whose chromosomes do not fit the stereotypical XX model?

What happens to women who cannot produce eggs, who have no ovaries, who have undergone hysterectomy or who have otherwise experienced changes to their reproductive anatomy?

And most importantly:

How does a frightened woman fleeing domestic abuse prove that she is “biologically a woman” without being subjected to exactly the kind of bodily scrutiny and gender policing that feminists have spent generations challenging?

If your answer is that she does not have to prove it, then why should a trans woman?

If your answer is documentation, what happens to the woman who has none?

If your answer is appearance, whose idea of female appearance are you using?

And if there is no practical biological test, then perhaps “biology” is not quite the straightforward answer you have presented it as.

Women fleeing violence need refuge workers asking whether they are safe, not whether they can pass an ideological biology exam.....""...You have chosen to draw a line between yourself and me by saying that you are a woman defined by biology and that women like me are not. I am therefore asking you to explain where that line actually is.

Not in a court judgment.

Not in an EHRC document.

Not in a political slogan.

In biology.

Because if you cannot define the biological test, and cannot explain how it could be applied fairly to women standing at the door of a refuge, then “biologically a woman” is not the clear, objective safeguard you claim it is.

It is simply a phrase being used to decide which women are allowed through the door.

And when the woman on the other side of that door is fleeing an abuser, that is not an abstract debate.

That is somebody's life.

Yours sincerely,

A woman who apparently needs a biology exam to prove it,'

Edit: This is why their narrative is confusing as fuck: "trans identifying women"... forget they are referring to trans men here...these people are fucking idiots 🤦‍♀️

Seems to me they thought they would use some more pick-me queslings to make it seem that everyone holds their views... Newsflash: The anti-trans movement is a very small minority, and no amount of this bull will change the fact!

Can someone tell me how the fuck gay men are victims of trans women "stealthing", or what that even fucking means... seems to me that every bit of 'evidence' Sex Mattress provided was bulshit that was not relevant to trans women

The judgment recognised that Sex Matters had standing as an expert charity and thanked our legal team, Sarah Vine KC and Chris Knight KC, for the “very high quality of the submissions”.

To that I would add thanks to our solicitor, Janet Farrell at Bhatt Murphy, and to Dennis Kavanagh of the Gay Men’s Network, who provided a witness statement in relation to gay men as victims of “stealthing” by trans-identifying women."
