As a fun exercise I thought it would be useful to game out the worst-case midterm scenarios for Democrats. Consider this a form of exposure therapy to reduce one’s worst fears. For today, it’s about whether the polling is systematically overrating the Dems. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/exposure-t...

I know the birthday paradox is so counterintuitive but it gets even worse when you increase the probability. You need 23 people in a room to have a 50% likelihood that two of them share a birthday but you only need 82 for the probability to be 99.99%.

I was talking about the plot of final destination with my 12-year-old daughter and she asked me what age the kids were in the movie and if they were 8 to 10 years old. I had a visceral reaction to the idea of making this movie with kids that young. It was horrifying.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.

One of my favorite things about Mayo winning the All-Ireland finally is that someone wrote a book in 2007 about the curse and how miserable it was to lose so many times + they went on to lose another 7 finals before they finally won. I don’t think there will ever be anything like it in sports again

I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
A hand drawn eight panel cartoon. First two panels are a colander sitting frowning on a shelf. Then the colander is frowning straining pasta, then three more panels of frowning sitting on a shelf. Then a big panel where it's projecting a bunch of crescent eclipse shapes and smiling with speech bubbles around saying "Wow! Look! Amazing! Beautiful!" And then one final panel where it's sitting on a shelf smiling.
