Like CATS? Like SPACE? Like MECHS? Like SHOOTING STUFF. Like QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ETHICS OF CONSENT IN UPLIFTING ANIMALS AND ALSO THE HEALING OF TRAUMA THROUGH KINDNESS Then, my friend, put the 6TH OF OCTOBER in your diary. Audio and EBOOK release of BEASTS OF THE WILD BLACK. (Tell everyone.)
A cat is looking out of a human space suit at you. That's what we call in the trade, a visual metaphor. Now comes the blurb.

Years ago, Deep Strike cadet Min Law was left behind during what was meant to be a routine operation. Though he survived, the resulting trauma almost ended his career. Now, as captain of the DST Thunberg, he is preparing to take his crew on a similar journey to a seemingly quiet world following a garbled distress signal. The mission is simple on paper: find the source of the call, offer aid, return home.

But nothing is simple in the Wild Black at the edges of the unexplored universe. As the crew of the Thunberg searches for the signal’s source, they find strange ships and corpses that shouldn’t be there. The mysteries begin to pile up. What happened out here? And why does some of the technology look horribly familiar?

Fortunately, Min’s team of animal counterparts is prepared for anything. The bear, Sitka Pete, is eight hundred pounds of loyal muscle. The rooks are quick and coordinated, perfect for reconnaissance. And the cats, Oz and Hinder, well, they’re just cats. But together they’re more than up for whatever the Wild Black can throw at them—even if this region isn’t quite so unexplored after all . . .

Heads of State – stupid, oh so brilliantly stupid
Heads of State is showing on Amazon Prime and directed by Nobody (2021) director, Ilya Niashuller. I was having one of those days where I needed something which didn't need me to think and, hopefully, would make me laugh. Heads of State on Prime had been popping up on their recommendations as I'd been making my way through other shows and, well, the trailer is actually solidly funny.

Supergirl review
I loved Supergirl - woman of tomorrow. It was my gateway back into superhero graphic novels which I'd long avoided because sheesh they can be tiresome, self-referential and, worst of all, boring. A friend bought me the graphic novel because, I suspect, he knew I'd never get over myself enough to take the risk. I owe him a debt of gratitude because the source material for this film is superb.

Eastercon – a place of hope and resistance
This weekend it was Eastercon - Iridescence. Held in Birmingham, UK. It was very busy and we were in a hotel large enough to also accommodate the 500 attendees of the anime con known as HaruhiCon. It was lovely to see everyone again but my main take away from the weekend was the focus on hope, community and resistance. From panels on hopepunk to panels on class, how to resist and how to write different types of social organisation that aren't empires and monarchies there was a constant stream of engagement with how to build the kind of world we want to see.

Pagans is something so fresh it feels like it has existed forever. It's a story where Christianity never took root in the UK, nor the rest of the world for that matter. As a result of the Norman robber barons not invading in 1066, the UK never wound up being united into a single country (hundreds of years later) but nor did Anglo-Saxon culture get eradicated by the Normans and their thieving buddies.
