By the time I was out of the shower, the bed was changed, bedding in the washing machine, and the bedroom vacuumed. I swear I wasn’t in there long enough for him to do all that, but nervy Jon moved fast, apparently.
I was nervous waiting for my family to arrive, mainly because Jon was a mess. It didn’t matter how much I reassured him, or how much energy he used. My brat was petrified and his anxiety was catching.
Mum and Dad arrived first, by about a minute, and said a quick hello before taking their bag upstairs to freshen up.
‘That’s Mum’s way of saying she’s been dying for a wee for the last twenty miles, despite dad offering to make an extra stop at the services.’
Susan’s three children ran towards the door yelling ‘Happy Birthday, Uncle Tim,’ in unison.
I hugged them all and pointed at David, George, and Daisy, by way of introduction. ‘And this is Susan,’ My cousin was staggering in with three bags and a stack of board games. Jon swooped in to relieve her of the boxes and two of the bags and her eyes widened as she looked up to thank him.
‘Wow! Um, sorry, your picture did not do you justice.’ Susan turned the family shade of puce. ‘It’s lovely to meet you. I’ll be over here learning to act like a normal human being.’
Jon gave her his most winning smile and I swear Susan swooned a little.
‘Thanks, don’t be silly, let’s find somewhere to put these. Oh cool, I love Hungry Hippos, and Operation.’
‘Don’t worry, he’s used to being admired. He should have an ego the size of Everest by now. He’s much too…’
‘Baby, stop right there! Don’t make me tell you off on your birthday.’
‘What? I’m showing off my incredible boyfriend to one of my favourite humans.’
‘Yeah, and I know how that sentence ends. So don’t.’ He leaned over and kissed me on the forehead and went to put the games on the dining table.
‘Nice. He’s hot and he won’t let you put yourself down. I like him already.’
‘Uh-huh, he’s a bossy brat at times.’
‘And you love him all the more for it.’
‘Yeah, I really do.’

Any other writers just HATE the English rule of ALWAYS putting punctuation inside of quotes? Sometimes, it just RUINS the emotion of the moment: And could he see there, in the dark, on the mirror, scrawled bloody and dripping... was it really the word... "DIE?"

After hanging up, I fold the flyer into quarters and tuck it into my purse. Instinctively, I look up and down the street before crossing.
That’s when I catch it.
A man’s silhouette a few yards away, facing me, and his racing heart.
A decade of undeath cannot erase the acute sense of danger honed by a childhood of warnings. Don’t take candy from strangers. Don’t walk anywhere alone at night, especially not in a skirt that short. Don’t disrespect or argue with men, because that will make them angry, and they’ll hurt you when they’re angry. My mother made sure I grew up attuned to the nuances of body language, to the small shifts in someone’s tone or expression. I learned to read tension in the air and the intent in a person’s stance.
But where once the instinct to fight or flee would rear its head, all of my predator’s senses sharpen instead. My surroundings stand out in vivid detail, while the slight huff of the man’s breath reaches my ears and the smell of tobacco smoke drifts from him toward me. Hunger reverberates through my core, ravenous, eager. Whoever he is, whatever his intentions, he has no chance.

It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

The Good Thyme Inn quite literally held secrets galore within its walls. The most extensive overhaul occurred during Marmalade’s tenure as the innmaster, soon after Shallot was born. Shallot had vague memories of the reconstruction, of seeing complex clockwork before they were sealed away behind wood panels, but those memories had formed her image of the inn-world within her mind.
During the reconstruction, hidden nooks had been installed throughout the inn. Small, secret places where one could stash precious items. Marmalade had been fond of hiding coins in odd places for fear of losing everything if bandits came and demanded all the money under her desk. Shallot had once believed her great-aunt was paranoid; bandits never came into town. Until she grew up and realized ‘bandits’ had always been Marmalade’s underhanded way of referring to the baron and his men.
