It does help that poll results still show supermajority (or even greater) support for antidiscrimination protections, so even thinking it is immoral doesnt extend to wanting to inflict harm (i unironically love this facet of this country)

Hank Green did a video on how a lot of people have been doing this "I don't hate any race I just think they are inferior in some way, that's not racism" and, like, yes it is. And it unlocked something for me that feels really obvious about how people think about racism wrong

a lot (most?) people understand racism as “being a meanie” and if you aren’t a meanie then you can’t be racist, even if you believe in, say, the biological inferiority of entire groups of people based on phenotype

Those of you who've followed me for a long time know my history with the GamerGate harassment campaign; I was one of their longstanding targets, they tried to dox me, go after my family, etc. I raised an early alarm about them and covered them. And I *still* do not agree with this take.

Look, let’s be blunt. The academy is in many ways a fundamentally conservative institution. The overwhelmingly left of center partisan outlook of faculty is largely due to the fact the Republican Party is for stupid people and thus deeply embarrassing to be associated with.

In 1872, the Chicago Evening Post published an absolutely brutal editorial mocking people who objected to sharing public spaces with Black people. Still some dated language but a remarkable piece. “Hire a carriage and you can sit all alone by your own sweet self for $2 an hour.”
1872 article reading, in part: “AYou do not like, reader, to sit by the side of a well-behaved negro in a theatre's dress circle? Very well; take a box. If your antipathies are not worth $5 extra, they are not very important.
You do not like, fastidious madam, to sit by the side of "some offensive creature" in the car? Very well; hire a carriage, and you can sit all alone with your own sweet self for $2 an hour. But you cannot expect to charter and monopolize a Persian heaven on wheels for five cents, you know. You object, dear sir, to risk the chance of meeting… Fred. Douglass, Alexander Dumas, Minister Bassett, John Jones, or Jared Grey? Very well; you have an inalienable and God-given right to object. You can avoid these people by having your meals served in your room. Isn't your pet aversion worth a dollar to you? ... To insult people because of their color is bad enough; but it is mean and cowardly to make them pay the expenses of their own crucifixion. “. Likely by George Mclellan or his brother.

"Finally, a Foolproof System"
A comic in the style of an old print ad
A floating head of a balding man with glasses says "are you tired of having pointless arguments with your dad?"

FINALLY A FOOLPROOF SYSTEM
HIRE ME TO BE YOUR DAD FOR A LITTLE WHILE
SAY ANYTHING YOU WANT AND I'LL JUST REPLY:

We now see the same man sitting in a chair, waving
"Hey, that's a great point"
"I never thought of it like that."
"I value your perspective and will take that into full consideration."
"I'm just so proud of you."

Never worry about a bad phonecall or an uncomfortable holiday again.
For only $29.95 an hour, I'll smile and nod and tell you that you really opened my eyes about a few things. I might even mean it!
Call now!

Off to the side there's an extra box labeled "I can also be"
and inside is:
Your mom
your uncle
mailman
the mayor

which are all the same guy wearing various disguises.

Talking about “polarization” is not only a lazy euphemism to avoid talking about the far right authoritarianism. It’s also mostly a lie, repeated over & over again in polite society & the newspapers, despite overwhelming evidence that large supermajorities of Americans agree on all kinds of things.

Nonsense. ~70% of Americans agree on all kinds of things. The problem is our deeply antidemocratic institutions, which empower the 30% to control the government & regularly block all of the many policies favored by the 70%. That, & the fact that the GOP is now a far right authoritarian party.

They started with the idea that the constitution does not ban partisan gerrymandering in of itself. fine. This has transformed into effectively a constitutional right to racially gerrymander if there’s a colorable partisan end. It’s a completely topsy turvy reading of the constitution.

I’m a broken record, but it’s facially insane that the SCOTUS’s position is that the interest of a political party—an entity with no special constitutional protection—in gerrymandering is more important than black people’s right to vote, which we have several constitutional amendments addressing

This is a very common point of confusion. The vast majority of the way corporations harm the environment is by responding to consumer demand. People have built this fantasy world where the American middle class isn't at all responsible for the gas they buy or the water they use on their lawns.

this is correct. we so often choose to not fight when we might lose, rather than taking the risk and getting caught trying. older example: the biden wh's response to dobbs. “well, our executive action is guaranteed to be overturned” — and? do it anyway, lose, and show the courts are partisan.
