An oak cherry gall, caused by a tiny parasitic wasp co-opting the leaf bud, causing it to produce a life support growth pod for its larvae instead of a normal leaf 🌱🌳 #PlantSky #WildflowerHour #Trees #TreeClub #ThickTrunkTuesday #Nature #UKWildlife
A small spherical berry like structure, green mottled with veins of red freckles, growing among a cluster of young oak leaves (probably quercus robur). This one is on an oak seedling I've been growing with the probavly vain hope of eventually turning it into some kind of bonsai. The gall process does the tree no harm apparently to be left to get on with it.

Gall of the week, a bit of a challenge to find, is caused by the sawfly Euura mucronata on sallows, Salix spp. It may be a complex of species according to the host species, so maybe should be E. mucronata agg. Photographer not known, image from the excellent BPGS website.

During our Valentine’s Day weekend trip, I spotted an acorn on blue oak with a gall wasp (presumably Andricus albobalani) chewing her way out. So I kept the acorn and she emerged from it in our hotel room. Most people probably don’t consider this as a romantic gift but I think it is 😂

I am simultaneously excited that there is so much to learn about the natural world and also frustrated that I don't have all the answers now. Two galls I'm seeing and here and there is nothing about them in the literature. Eremophila leaf galls and these spongy Banksia galls demand answers

Here's some impressive Mesostoa kerri galls on silver Banksia. Because we can roughly date Banksia with node counts we can tell that this Banksia has been infested for several years and because Banksia retain cones for years we also know this individual has not successfully produced any fruit.
Large swollen stem galls. These are usually packed will larvae of this host specific waspHere are several years of galls. They form on the newest growth and Banksia can be dated with node counts so we get a good idea of how long they've had this colony of gall waspsThese are previous years galls that are filled with exit holes

Why are other insects commonly found on oak galls? The gall wasp not only manipulates the physical growth, but some can manipulate the vascular system to emit a sugary liquid, attracting other insects to feed, and defend, the baby wasp inside. #biodiversity #mutualism

19. Poplar spiral gall in a black poplar leaf stalk. These are twisty little galls caused by an aphid that induces formation of a short corkscrew of distended leaf stem. I'm more familiar with wasp galls on oak. So I I thought this aphid gall was very curious. #SciArt #ArtAdventCalendar
A colour pencil and watercolour drawing of a twisted, lumpy poplar spiral gall in the stem of a poplar leaf. The galls are the result of an aphid, Pemphigus spyrothecae, developing in the leaf stalk of black poplar, Populus nigra. The aphids cause a spiral structure with 2-3 turns to form in a petiole (leaf stalk.) Galls start off green, turning to yellow and red as they mature in August to September.
