Still one of my favorite captures. A #fireweed bud #gall midge, Dasineura epilobii, oviposits on a fireweed bud next to an associated #parasitic #wasp (Platygastridae) also ovipositing on the same bud. In situ single shot photo. #macro #photography #entomology #enemies #frenemies #nature #darktaxa
A fireweed bud gall midge, Dasineura epilobii, oviposits next to an associated parasitic Platygastrid wasp also ovipositing into the same fireweed bud. The gall midge has two of her legs over the dorsal side of the wasp.

Our research was recently featured on the German TV game show "Wer weiß denn sowas?" ("Who knows?")! The question covered our #discovery of parasitism by the love vine, Cassytha fuliformis, on the gall wasp, Belonocnema fossoria, published in @currentbiology.bsky.social by @cellpress.bsky.social.

One of my favorite activities while at #craft markets or #art shows is to find art of #fireweed, Chamerion angustifolium, and see if the artist unknowingly depicted a flower bud #gall induced by a midge, Dasineura epilobii. Here're some on a fabric print used for a headband by #HappyAK (see arrows).
Densely depicted for weed with flowers, buds, and galls. Normal buds are longer than they are wide while buds that appear as wide or wider than they are long are galled. Three halls are pointed out with arrows. Art by Happy AK.
