my current outlook on my own work: @ak47.io built "the champagne of beta embedded databases" I'm building the walmart discount wine of database-ish things ... a start's a start.

Marcan did some research and it looks like a bad hot fix job: social.treehouse.systems/@marcan/1139... Tbf it's so sloppy it almost looks like an attacker compromised the supply chain for pixel updates and wanted to test their hypothesis

So there's a bunch of noise going around a sneaky forced Google Pixel 4a update that seems to cripple batteries... and this is quite interesting. Old kernel: ``` Linux version 4.14.302-g6ff6ddc33f7d...

Oh, and I forgot to mention, AI wasn't used to write the code, just good old brain cells.

Finally done with the log-structured persistent key/value store database thingy that I was writing, featuring "proper" error handling, automatic data compaction, `cargo doc` documentation, lib+bin structure and (not really much) more. Using Rust, naturally (\/)(°,,,°)(\/)

Yes, 2025 isn't looking like it will be a great year. Right wing authoritarianism is rising. Global warming continues unabated. The world is as fractured as ever. But at least we can count on one positive thing: it is the Year of Linux Desktop.

If you can. Choose differently. (Not a possibility for everyone) - Use Linux instead of Windows/MacOS. - Stop using Alphabet/Google, Meta, Microsoft etc. platforms as much as you possibly can. - Build on OpenSource platforms. - Learn how to self-host instead of using cloud. Prepare yourself.

The complex of ideas I’m going to call the Dark Internet Forest emerges from mostly insidery tech thinking, but from multiple directions.

I gave up and used AI to help solve #AdventOfCode Day 13... How am I supposed to know what a Diophantine Equation is? /s At least I can report gemini-2.0-flash-exp is pretty useful, especially so for #Rustlang It was the first day I decided to use tests to debug my code though, so that's cool.

Feels pretty good to solve today's #AdventOfCode in #Rustlang without using any AI again. I try to do things The Rust Way™, but damn, that was a lot of println!'s and dbg!'s 😅 I actually left them in this time, so you can go check out my "process" if you'd like: github.com/artogahr/adv...

This was the first day that provided a proper challenge. Pretty happy to be able to solve it though. #AdventOfCode Day 11 done in #RustLang github.com/artogahr/adv... (my first solution took minutes to run, used all my 32GB's of memory and crashed half-way through)

Today's #AdventOfCode took a long time unfortunately, 1) Because, of course, I didn't implement the "proper" #Rust idiomatic solution for Part 1 2) This stupid bug: github.com/artogahr/adv...
A piece of Rust code, showcasing a bug in the implementation

fn trim_memory(expanded_map: &mut Vec<Option<usize>>) {
    // .last().is_none() will only return true
    // if the vector is empty
    while expanded_map.last().is_none() {
        expanded_map.pop();
    }
    // vs the correct version
    while expanded_map.last().unwrap().is_none() {
        expanded_map.pop();
    }
}

“Don’t feed the trolls” also extends to bad opinion pieces in papers of record. They run them bc people react to them the most. If we stop linking to bad columns and instead post thinkers we find valuable (& generate convo around it), incentives change. It’s not easy and takes constant practice!

Security pro tip: if you find a USB key on the ground somewhere, DO NOT plug it in to your home computer. Take it to the office and plug it in there. They have way better software that will mitigate any threats.

Bluesky needs something like a "Low Quality / Repost" report option that disincentivizes low effort reposts, you know the kind I'm talking about. Otherwise I'm afraid even these blue skies will get cloudy.
