trying to force myself to share at least the occasional poem, now that I'm throwing new work against the walls. this one was published in Southern Indiana Review 🖤 I wrote it in a time when I had not really slept for many months and was going insane.
GABRIELLE BATES
New Baroque Derangement
I was conceived in a restless biome, a riot of wisteria.
Unguarded. Bitch of blue.
A woman pushed her tongue into my mouth and it was good weather.
There were spirals, spirals at the heart as pure lasso—ice pure loss skipping liquid, straight to air I could and couldn't bare because I was and wasn't.
Combing a lone shore there under the moonlit backwash of receding waves, all that grit in my gums and oceanscape's
overlappings, I am telling you in that fading cyanic
I saw your faces. In the sands. I saw.
Every person I might have been or birthed
I could not reach but I could see.
A consciousness I'd once called mine clambering into a swan boat.
And high above, and far around, the rope of air caught music's meat. I saw what seeing used to mean.

Wrote a poem from the perspective of an ice swan melting & McNeese Review was kind to publish it. I thought this might be one of those odd personal experiments no one would want, with a pulse only I could feel—glad to be wrong 🤍

OCCUPATION
As dawn breaks on the horns of my ox, I plow the earth with patient pride.
The earth is moist and warm on my bare feet.
I beat iron all morning-the darkness is dyed red.
In the afternoon heat I pick olives, the leaves the loveliest of greens:
I'm light from head to toe.
Guests come without fail each evening, my door is wide open to all songs.
At night I wade knee-deep into the water and pull the nets out of the sea: the fish get all mixed up with the stars.
Now I'm responsible for the state of the world:
people and earth, darkness and light.
So you see I'm up to my ears in work.
Hush, my rose, hush—
I'm busy falling in love with you.

Happy birthday to my first book, Judas Goat 🎀 She pairs well with Kristeva’s Powers of Horror, the oeuvre of Brigit Pegeen Kelly, growing up religious, death thoughts, tenderness despite, the long horizontal pupils of prey animals, and holding on close to your dog.

This new love poem by Nick Martino (just came out in Passages North) is so beautiful—perfect music
LOVE POEM
You watched your first deer die when you were six.
You watched the slotted eye-light was there and then gone-but that's not right, is it? Having seen death open like night-blooming jasmine, the hour of its unsticking blue and slow?
It's late. Moonlight
waterfalls the plastic blinds. I give you the bottle of Red Label, you give me the dab rig. You light the nail for me.
Your resin paints my voice shut like a basement window.
It's an evening of gifts: I hate this feeling in my lungs but I love the name you give to shatter. Yes,
I know you have pills for later, long after I've fallen asleep.
I know I'll wake to check if you're still breathing—
Staring down the dark, breathless for the rising of your chest.
