Translation is not about copying a poem into another language. It’s about deciding what survives when language changes and moves into this third-space beyond explanation and interpretation.

Writing about recent books is so challenging. I feel haven't lived with the book long enough to write about it. I envy anyone who feels like they can give a confident opinion of a literature in short periods of time.

You and your words build community, and community will support you. This is what I learn with every moment of engaging with writers and artists, poets and essayists. Our people are scaffolding for each other. And we are all constructing something marvelous, something beautiful.

Where, who, how does one get their hands, reasonably, on a pdf of recent poetry anthologies from those big uni/academic publishers? Even Nortons, Routledges, etc are so expensive I wouldn’t dream of purchasing. But the anthology is such important work, generally.

‘Subject: Mirror, Mirror’: An Excerpt by Badar Salem
From 'Lonely as a Crowded Room' By Badar Salem Translation by the author Subject: mirror, mirror I spent the entire day staring at the ceiling, unable to find a single reason to rise from bed: not for a sip of water, not for the bathroom. I wished to remain there indefinitely, shielded from life itself. Throughout those endless hours, as the sky shifted from blue to black, I contemplated my existence but felt nothing—no love, no sorrow, no longing.

Unironically think Lauren Berlant’s On The Inconvenience of Other People may be the best poetics essays I’ve read in years, and they’re not even intended as poetics essays. What a brilliant, brilliant work on the language of speaking to a present and live moment and audience.
