Yes, I think it will definitely impact, with the potential to widen the gap between RG and the rest. Although the REF aimed to avoid this by recognising excellent research wherever it was found, it's a tough ask when the excellent researchers are no longer there.

Great post articulating v real concerns: 'political pressures cd lead to diversion of RD&I funding to more immediate and politically salient priorities. Pressures to satisfy too many constituencies, combined with weak governance, cd lead to [dividing] funding into large number of sub-critical pots'

Why not consider putting together a proposal to a publisher? The process itself might be useful in corralling and structuring your thoughts, so definitely not time wasted.

Hey @theguardian.com feel free to devote a few headlines to the total crisis afflicting literally most of the HE sector and the government’s complete abdication of responsibility for it. Or just keep going on about one guy at one place who might or might not have been over-promoted; whatever…

For Whom the Bell Tolls by
John Donne
No man is an island, Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.

So true. And last night I found eBay to be insanely vigorous in their safeguarding of my history of random purchases, sending me 3 (3!) unique passcodes, asking me to create a new password, as well as (natch) wanting my fingerprint.

That's a deeply weird route. If you approach Canterbury from the North you're essentially doing so from the Thames. In fact, that whole route is in the Thames.

Well, looking at UKRI's data for 2022-23, the top 20 unis in terms of value of awards are as follows: S/SE - 5; North - 5; East - 1; Scotland - 2; Midlands - 3; SW - 3; Wales - 1. Aggregating these, S/SE has ~30% of overall value.

Phil Ward @frootle.bsky.social · 12/02/2025
As ever, I think we need to be more nuanced about suggesting where research/funding will be concentrated. S/SE is not synonymous with the Golden Triangle: there's a lot of smaller unis in S/SE that may lose out, and many huge players in N/SW/Scotland that may benefit.

I don't know the answer, but I was told that, for strawberry jam, the seeds are actually added back in after the jam is made, and that they're actually little chips of wood. Even as I write this I can't believe how implausible it sounds. I'm going to have to look this up.
