Dear translators: please take a break today. You deserve it. Our craft is a subtle, often misunderstood one, but we know the amount of skills, creativity and passion it takes. It's worth the neverending fight for #TranslatorsintheCredits and against LLMs. We see you. You rock 🤍

🖼️ 𝗧𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 🖼️ Not like making tapestry, more acting like tapestry. Dating back to the 19th century, this expression comes from the era of balls: when someone went alone to an event and wasn't invited to dance, therefore staying standing in a corner, it was said that they were "doing tapestry".

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗗𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀? by @bscotch.net is a game filled with puns and silly boss fights. A great foe you might encounter is a robotic ram called the G.O.A.T, a brilliant name... that only works in English. A little investigation on how our teams translated it into 4 different languages!👇️ 🤓 🐐 #gameloc
In Latin American Spanish: "Cabrón".
Literally means "big goat."
Colloquially, cabrón is slang for "dude" and can be used both as an insult or as a term of endearment for close ones.
An extremely fitting double entendre! In German: "Rammbock".
"Bock" means "ram". "Rammbock" means "battering ram."
So, literally... A "Bock" that rams you. As there was no idiomatic expression with "goat" in DE to play with, our team chose to go for a straightforward pun that also lets you know what'll happen to you during the fight! In Brazilian Portuguese: "Cabra da Peste".
"Cabra" means goat. "Da peste" literally would mean "plague", but the whole idiom is "Cabra da Peste", meaning someone who's fearless and brave. A clever use of an actual expression! In French: "Cyber-Biquette".
No pun here, just a shift in humor: "Cyber" came from the sprite of the character itself, since it is a robotic goat.
"Biquette" is a colloquial, cute (and kind of obsolete) word for goat. The final name is fun, silly and accurately descriptive!

5/ On source VS target • Does the translation relay the original intention, the intended feeling? • Are there misinterpretations or mistranslations? Fidelity and creativity are equally important. The art of localization resides in the subtle balance between transparency and transcreation 💫
Comparing the translation with the source text is mandatory.

• Does the translation relay the original intention, the intended feeling?
• Are there misinterpretations or mistranslations?

While reviewing these points, never lose sight of the end-user experience.

Players won’t compare source to target. What matters to them is their experience in their language.

Some form of divergence in translation is allowed if it doesn't impair or even serves the target experience.

Transcreation is often a good call, but sometimes misguided!

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐝 💫 Game localizers @fromthevoid.net · 16/06/2026
4/ On implementation (a particularly important point, as it is specific and crucial to a videogame localization) • Has the loc been tested and implemented properly? • Is there any overlapping text or elements that don't fit in the interface?
One thing (amongst lots of others) that differenciates game localization from other types of localization is implementation.

• Has the loc been tested and implemented properly?
• Is there any overlapping text or elements that don't fit in the interface?

This was a particularly strong point in favor of Kathy Rain 2, where the implementation is immaculate.
130
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐝 💫 Game localizers @fromthevoid.net · 16/06/2026
3/ On style • Is the text fluid, readable? • Is the text adressing the player written in a way fitting the tone of the game? • Does each character have a distinct voice?
Then, you’ll need to determine if the the style is good.

• Is it fluid, readable?
• Is the text adressing the player written in a way fitting the tone of the game?
• Does each character have a distinct voice?
130
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐝 💫 Game localizers @fromthevoid.net · 16/06/2026
2/ On linguistics • Is the language good? • What about grammatical mistakes? • Typos? • Do the sentences make sense in the target language? • Are they devoid of Anglicisms?
Of course, you first judge the localization on a pure linguistic front.

• Is the language good?
• What about grammatical mistakes?
• Typos?
• Do the sentences make sense in the target language?
• Are they devoid of Anglicisms?

1/ On subjectivity and your own preferences (you need to aknowledge them to be as fair as possible!)
Localization is a creative field, thus inherently subjective.

Combining the subjectivity of a panel helps tend towards objectivity, so this is why there were no less than five judges for ATAA’s game loc award.

Nevertheless, it always remains subjective in some areas. The more aware you are about your own preferences, the fairer you can be.
