RFK Jr. ordering the CDC to remove the two measles deaths from Pennsylvania is misconduct. If the protocol for reporting infectious disease cases and deaths is that the CDC uses the state health department determination, then RFK Jr. has just changed that protocol without rationale or explanation.

Look, I fully understand it was finished under unideal circumstances, but I wish the animation in Coyote vs Acme was better. You have a character named for Tex Avery interacting with the ropiest stuff I've seen in a cinema in a long time. But perhaps that makes the satire more pointed.

Most of us would struggle to imagine a world in which U.S. soldiers, police officers, Border Patrol agents and elected leaders could be dragged before an international court, tried by judges from random countries across the globe, found guilty under international laws we neither consent to nor control, and then imprisoned thousands of miles from America.

A report on the ground from the ICE shooting in Biddeford that should make every parent in this country lose their minds:
Cecelia Humiston, 22, lives on Chapel Street. She was asleep with her two-year-old son when she woke up to the sounds of a commotion on surrounding streets.

When she went to investigate, she saw what appeared to be a person lying on the ground on Pool Street.

She remembers hearing an older woman with a distressed family, yelling, “You took her dad, you took her dad!”

“They were with a little girl, she couldn't have been older than three,” Humiston said. “She was still in her Bluey pajamas.”

Humiston described law enforcement as “rude,” and said they barricaded family’s car from leaving. Another yelled at the little girl, who was trying to smell flowers.

do think one of the big problems of the era is that a lot of mainstream politicians have forgotten that you just can't convince everyone; the point of successful electoral politics is to convince the people you can convince and to *defeat the rest*

Redefining Discrimination: Dismantling Environmental Protections through the Logic of Reactionary Colorblindness

Ian Carrillo and Annabel Ipsen

Abstract - The authors examine the unique role that racism plays in guiding and structuring anti-environmental ideas and behaviors. They focus on the influence of reactionary colorblindness, which is a legal strategy that promotes race-neutral individuality and activates white resentment in seeking to reverse policies for racial equality. The authors ask, In what ways do anti-environmental policies harness, replicate, and repurpose the logic of reactionary colorblindness? They conduct a qualitative content analysis of a sample of the second Trump administration’s executive orders (EOs). In these EOs, the authors find that the administration draws on reactionary colorblindness as a tool to redefine discrimination and undermine environmental protection in three main ways: (1) the EOs justify eliminating environmental justice initiatives by claiming they confer group-based racial advantages that are antithetical to colorblind individuality; (2) the EOs label diversity, equity, and inclusion, environmental justice, and climate change programs as “forced discrimination” to rationalize policy dismantling; and (3) the EOs adopt a stance of ignorance toward environmental and climate science, thereby rejecting the rationale underlying policies that promote environmental and climate justice. The authors extend debates in environmental sociology and the sociology of race and ethnicity by analyzing how colorblindness and the racism of omission work in service of anti-environmentalism.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."
