Have I heard this song people are talking about, in the sense that eight bars of it slipped into the background of my brain for twelve seconds while I was looking at bananas? Maybe! But I wouldn't notice, I wouldn't know the singer, and I certainly wouldn't know the title.

I pay *zero* attention to the music being half-piped in the background at the grocery store, though. Even if it's a Top 40 station (and most of the stores around me play Classic 90s), if it's not a song that I already know well, I'm not going to remember a single bar of it after the fact.

I can tell you who has a problem with someone liking Buffy: the elitist snobs that he associates with, who see anything that smacks of 'genre' as lowbrow and thus unworthy. Doubly so if it's a show with a woman as the lead. He's trying to justify liking the show to other terrible people.

The first few episodes can be a bit abrasive, so if you watch them and aren't sure either way, push through. It's not entirely clear where the Mariner/Boimler dynamic is going, and I think they front-loaded some of the more R&M-style humour to try to draw in audiences who like that sort of thing.

I definitely see why people saw it as a Rick and Morty thing to start with, but it's more of a love letter to all of the weird and goofy parts of Star Trek, from writers who both know how nonsensical that stuff was and loved it anyway, and are putting both the nonsense and the love on screen. (1/2)

It's been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but being post-2000 rules out both TNG and DS9. And while I've enjoyed most of the Discovery-and-beyond Trek, the only one of those that I think belongs in Top 100 territory would be Lower Decks and the only animated show on this list is Bojack Horseman.

As a rule, when someone uses the term "with all due respect", what they mean is "what the fuck is wrong with you". Because the word 'due' is in there, you're only saying "I speak with the respect that I think is due to you". Which can be "some, but you're talking wild right now" or "fuck you".

Another hypothetical: A Democratic candidate wants to support trans rights and reproductive rights, and also wants to use atom bombs to kill every person in Palestine and give the entire health care budget to AI, and if you vote for him other Democrats will follow his lead. Do you vote for him?

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
It's not complicated. It's not triage. It's a simple case of "we want you to help elect the people who will kill you, because the alternative would be that we would have to elect the people who won't kill you and we don't want to do that."
170
Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The entire premise of your argument is that if one side wants to kill everyone, and one side only wants to kill *some* people, the people who are going to be killed either way have to go and support that second side so that the people who aren't going to be killed don't have to save them.

I'm not American either. Understanding what's going on doesn't require you to be American, it just requires you to understand the basic premise of "once you say human lives are negotiable, the other side will keep negotiating until every life is gone."

If you care so damn much about protecting people, why aren't you pressuring the people who want to feed other people into woodchippers instead of asking the people being fed into the woodchippers to use their final moments to make your life a little bit easier?

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Will you vote for a democrat who will take away trans rights and reproductive rights and support increased funding for ICE as long as they say they're in favour of court reform? What is the acceptable number of children to feed into the woodchipper for your personal comfort and convenience?

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
If you don't give a shit about them why should they give a shit about you? Like, where is your line? Would you vote for a democrat who wants to take away trans rights and reproductive rights if they say they'll fight ICE?

This is also why he thinks 300 is so gay: because if you ignore all of the messaging and politics and plot, the *aesthetics* of 300 is very homoerotic, and that is the only part of the movie that he thinks is sending a message.

Yes, Snyder has always struck me as a very nice person who exclusively views the world in terms of aesthetics. This makes him very vulnerable to repeating fascist propaganda because fascism loves aesthetics and he doesn't get that that's what he's doing.

The thing is, this isn't really a fight about digital games. It's a fight about digital *ownership*. Steam spent a lot of time and effort convincing people that they would retain digital ownership no matter what happened to/on the platform. Sony has spent a lot of time and effort on the opposite.

To be perfectly honest, if you believe that there is anything like a functioning guardrail on any major commercially-available LLM system today or that any of these companies care about putting one into place I don't think we have anything else to talk about.

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Oh yes, I agree. You can see that in how the editors *responded* to slop on their platform, in contrast to how certain modern companies respond to inaccuracies and hallucinations spreading across the Internet. When the creators saw a problem, they fixed it instead of shrugging and pushing it harder.

I'm pretty sure that if the Wikipedia editors had sat around yelling "actually Wikipedia is good and we should use this model for everything and let peer-review determine all news going forward" while continuing to not put those models into place, it would not have ended up respected or popular.
1182
Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
It's not a bad comparison, because Wikipedia actually was deeply unreliable and should not have been used as a primary source when it launched. The editors spent years carefully instituting guardrails and moderation and really strict editing rules before it became a reliable source of information.

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
What they didn't do was yell at anyone claiming that Wikipedia was unreliable and insist that actually it was already great and didn't need any refinement or guardrails or new methodologies and everything should be run by peer-editing with no mechanisms to prevent abuse.

Misha Handman @frivyeti.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I *do* remember when Wikipedia specifically was considered slop, because it didn't have a large enough editor base to catch people messing around with it and as a result it was generally considered a deeply unreliable source. Because it was! They put a lot of effort into making it less sloppy.

Dogpiling or harassing *white cishet* users. Harassing marginalized groups is still fully acceptable to the Safety team, as seen by the number of repeated harassers still active on the platform.

Oh, I don't know about that chart. The personal finances percentage is the number of people who say they're "Living comfortably" or "doing okay", and the economy percentage is "excellent" and "good". I'm not sure that most people consider "doing okay" to be equivalent to "doing good".
