Many respondents describe their actions as driven by civic responsibility and concern for online communities, rather than personal grievance. 💡 We highlight reporting as a form of digital civic participation, with implications for platform governance, user agency, and trust & safety regulation.

With @yannistheocharis.bsky.social, @spyroskosmidis.bsky.social & Molly Roberts, we find that reporters are not a cross-section of society 🔍 They are more politically active (online + offline), more engaged online, and more likely to prioritize protection from harm over unrestricted free speech.

We analyzed a unique dataset of individuals who reported potentially illegal content through an independent reporting office in Germany (and Trusted Flagger under the DSA) and compared them with a broader sample of the German public.

Platforms increasingly rely on users to flag harmful content. But who actually reports content? 💻 In our paper, "Bystanders and Reporters: Who Acts Against Illegal Online Content?", published in @socialmedia-soc.bsky.social, we investigate who reports, how they differ, and what motivates them. 🧵

💡 Examples mattered: removing examples from Meta’s guidelines (Study 2) made users less certain, increased perceived difficulty, and led to more disagreement about which rule applied. 👉The broader takeaway: transparency only works if people can interpret and apply the rules in practice.
111
Friederike Quint @friederikeq.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
📚 More detail did not necessarily help. Longer guidelines were associated with more disagreement, more clicks, and slower decisions. So, more information can also make rules harder to navigate and apply.
111
Friederike Quint @friederikeq.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
🔍 Users often disagreed about whether the same post violated the same platform’s rules. Even under close-to-ideal conditions. Making rules available does not necessarily mean users will interpret them consistently. (Thus, increasing the length does not automatically increase rule transparency.)

📉 Amid depressing news, getting back into office life after a break, and slowly inching toward the end of my PhD, I wanted a simple way to track how my days actually felt — ideally colour-coded in a calendar so I could look back and reflect. So I built one (well, two) and made them open-source. 🧵⬇️
