Did you see this? Our funding of excellent research was one of the ways the US is (was?) great. These awards are very difficult to get even in the best of times.
Number of NSF awards in 2021-2025 far exceeds the awards for 2026.

Good gracious. This is way too much salt! Recommended salting is one crystal every 10 cm or so. Salting at this rate hurts animals living in water the next time it rains and destroys your sidewalks. #waterquality #protectourwater

Science and R&D has traditionally received strong bipartisan support in the US Congress. But the White House is supposedly pushing cuts of 55% (NSF), 44%(NIH), 27% (NOAA), 50% (NASA), 100% (USGS ecosystems). Meanwhile China INCREASED their R&D spending by 8.3%

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Academic institutions in the US need to seriously consider how they will support and protect their minority faculty during this time. The conditions we face are already hostile for most - targeted attacks and added barriers to advancement will push many to simply walk away.
