Artist’s painting of a hippo on a flake of limestone 🦛❤️ Perhaps a practice sketch, or simply for the joy of painting 3,500 years ago! From Deir el-Bahri, ancient Thebes, c. 1479–1425 BC 📷 The Met #Archaeology #Art
Met Museum image of an ancient Egyptian artist’s small, naturalistic painting of a standing hippopotamus on an uneven shaped flake of white limestone, dated c. 1479–1425. The hippo is painted in profile with head lowered and to the right. The body is outlined with black paint and painted brown. The belly, eyes, and ears are painted red. Although the ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, this painted hippo looks rather harmless. Dimensions: Height 10.8 cm, Width 12 cm

Egyptian artists made practice sketches on flakes of limestone, sometimes for use as templates when transferring an image to a tomb or temple wall. Limestone flakes were readily available because of the constant construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. Better still they cost nothing, unlike papyrus. A number of sketches on linestone were found at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations. This painting was acquired by the museum in the division of finds.

Occasionally we get tiny Goldcrests in the garden, hunting for insects amongst the evergreens. They’re resident in Britain, but some Goldcrests cross the North Sea to escape the harsher continental winters; people used to believe they rode on the backs of migrating Woodcocks. (watercolour) 🐡🪶

To clarify, there's nothing in this game that wouldn't pass muster in an M-rated film. There are people spreading malicious rumors about it, claiming that it is more extreme. It reminds me of Night Trap, supposedly one of the most transgressive games of its age. Reality: Milder than Power Rangers.

types of terminal programs wizardzines.com/comics/types...
sometimes annoying things happen in the terminal:

    why doesn’t Ctrl+C quit??
    why can’t I select text?

these things aren’t random: different “types” of programs have different conventions for how you interact with them!

here are some categories of programs & their conventions!
1. REPLs

(python3, your shell)
you type code, press Enter and it runs the code

rules:

quit with Ctrl+D (only works on an empty line)
usually you have a million keyboard shortcuts for editing text
    usually there’s history

2. full screen “TUI”s

(less, htop, ncdu, lazygit, mtr)

rules:

    quit with q (usually)
you can often navigate with arrow keys
often ? will open the help
to select text with the mouse, press Shift

3. noninteractive programs

or slightly interactive
(grep, git, sort, scp)

you start it, maybe it asks you a question or two, it does stuff, and it exits

rules:

    quit with Ctrl+C

4. wrappers

(ssh, env, tmux, rlwrap, unbuffer)
these wrap other terminal programs in some way

rules:

when the program(s) they’re wrapping exits, they exit

5. other

lots of things don’t fit info these 4 categories: text editors, games, email clients, IRC clients, …

rules:

I avoid these unless (like with vim) I’ve made a special effort to learn the program
