As European citizens we do not talk enough about weaponized bureaucracy. Sure, we'll return these invaluable relics our ancestors stole a century ago from your continent. All you have to do is adapt our whole way of life and thinking, fill out these 76 forms with attachments and we'll be in touch.

Random train thought: A surprisingly utilitarian argument against the ends justifying the means is chaos. It almost never turns out the way you imagined it, so an actual small evil can never be justified for a hypothetical greater good.

The behaviour of systems is defined by how energy flows between its signature components and how the total amount of energy in the system changes as time progresses.

Relatedly I was telling someone trying to break into ML research that AI has sort of killed a lot of the paths that used to exist. Just very hard to demonstrate effort and hustle now

AlphaEvolve is now Generally Available (GA) via Google Cloud. Built in partnership with Google DeepMind, this Gemini-powered agent brings autonomous algorithm optimization to your hardest engineering and research problems.
Image reads "AlphaEvolve on Google Cloud" with the Google Cloud logo at the top and the subtext "Define | Measure | Optimize | Apply" below the main title. The white text sits against a black background, with a vibrant, wavy, 3D abstract shape in purple and yellow along the bottom.

Tools from operations research solve so many problems and the fact they’re not super widely deployed really tells you that many bottlenecks are not technical

Even before the agentic revolution, prompting tricks stopped being very valuable, as our research has shown. The format isn't key, the best approach to AI right now is to clearly specify your goals, your output, what "good" & bad look like, how to test the results... (yes, this is just management)

a classic six panel comic where there are two characters: one person (presumably a democrat) and someone else in a MAGA hat with a red button between them.

in the first panel the MAGA dude says "for each press, an epstein file will be released."

in the second panel, he adds, "but you won't know if it's for a dem or a maga"

in the third panel, the dem hits the button — "bip!" — as the maga dude sweats. he continues to sweat in the fourth panel.

in the fifth panel, the dem continues to hit the button — "bip bip bip bip!"

and in the last panel, the dem is furiously hitting the button (bips are everywhere) as the maga dude tries to pull him away and yells "someone call kash!"

the point is democrats want all pedophiles exposed, regardless of party affiliation, and knowing some of ours might be included doesn't change that.

Don't threaten your agents. They model human interaction through the lens of a personal assistant. Humans tend to become unpredictable if you threaten them and so will agents.

Ultimately, you have to put your ego aside and try to enjoy the ride. This advice from Charlene Putney (in The Game Narrative Kaleidoscope by @inkle.co) feels worthy of printing out and sticking on the wall.
Loving it! Loving it all! The spreadsheets, the feedback, the sticky little problems the team are waiting for you to write the way out of. I remind myself: "what are you here on this earth to do?" I mutter. "This." And get right back into it. I remember my death. It's coming! "So what are you going to do about it?" Comes the inner whisper. I mutter "This!" and get right back into it. If I worry about what other people think, I try to raise my gaze all the way out past the heat death of the universe. This! Mmm, I love it.

Lots of open questions: is RSI indeed happening at the Big Three labs? How long can the exponential of LLM ability gain last? How much do Chinese models rely on distillation, and can they keep pace given chip constraints? Will there continue to be frontier open weights models?

There are real people, real women, real girls whose images have been edited by grok at the request of users. This is not some fictionalised, nebulous harm. That the 'adults in the room' and 'rules-based order' governments are humming and hawwing over taking a firm line on this is extraordinary

Lol. Whoever tuned that model has never heard of recall and their training set probably was lots of p*rn and p*rn only. That is exactly why you should do a decent ML course about model evaluation practices and ethical implications before you start training models.

6. “Elections are won from the centre” is a mantra used to try to block challenges from the left. It says “you can’t win if you want to change the system”. It ignores the fact that first the neoliberals and now the far right have completely transformed – in some respects replaced - the system.

Self-orthogonalizing attractor neural networks emerging from the free energy principle

It's interesting how sometimes to grow means to stray off the beaten path, try to do your own thing, get horribly entangled in the weeds. Then decide that blazing your own trail is not worth it this time, so you return to the beaten path. But now you know why, and next time you're better prepared.
