Radioactive decay is difficult to envision unless you have a cloud chamber. Here I use a piece of naturally radioactive monazite crystal (~25 cm) to produce very energetic alpha particles - a decay product - that ionize alcohol-saturated vapor. I use this in Geochron and Natural Disasters classes.

The mineral zircon has played a central role in understanding deep time. These detrital zircons are from Cambrian sandstones in NY, and they have accumulated radiation damage, which causes disorder and volume changes. This mosaic took some time to make. All c-axis aligned. #thinsectionthursday

For my first #ThinsectionThursday under the blue sky, one of my favourite micrographs: A serpentine pseudomorph after carbonate? The mineral with the grey interference colours is serpentine which apparently preserves the cleavage of a pre-existing carbonate.

For #ThinSectionThursday, Miocene glauconite recovered from the western Greenland margin, in thin section and core. Broadly speaking, glauconite is considered a diagnostic mineral for continental shelf marine environments where rates of sediment accumulation are very low. And it just looks cool.
