HiPOD: Channels in Rahway Valles This suggestion footprint contains channels and ridges that may have been created by volcanic, fluvial, and/or glacial processes. Higher resolution observations could help to untangle the histories of volcanism and water in this region. uahirise.org/hipod/ESP_07...

#fossilfriday After 20 years, I finally found clam geodes in the Purisima Formation in Santa Cruz, CA! These are ~5 myo Clinocardium (cockle) shells that were incompletely filled in by sediment after death. Groundwater rich in dissolved calcium carbonate then precipitated calcite crystals.
The part and counterpart of a clam geode. The mouth of the clam is pointed down and there is a wedge of cemented sandstone at the bottom; the upper 2/3 of the clam is infilled with incredible amber colored dogtooth spar calcite, about 6-8 mm thick. The part and counterpart of a clam geode. An image of a rock thin section viewed under the microscope in cross polarised light. The sample is dominated by large olivine and clinopyroxene crystals which are exhibiting bright second order interference colours. They are set in a much finer groundmass which contains abundant plagioclase crystals, recognisable through their first order grey interference colours and long, thin crystal shapes. Large vesicles are scattered through the sample, appearing rounded and black.
