For everyone west of Iceland, the September equinox happens today – so blessed equinox-day, American friends. For us in the UK, it occurs at 01:06 tomorrow so we need to wait a whole extra day for spooky season to officially begin.

Absolutely inhumane that the Orioles, last place in AL and cannot end with a winning season, are still not technically eliminated from playoff contention. Utterly devastated to wake up to a win against the Blue Jays this morning.

I do generally fear that, although the surface-level acceptance of neurodiversity is increasing, the increased corporatisation of the workplace in heritage and academia is pushing these people out.

Very cloudy in Edinburgh but a few glimpses of the sun not long after maximum. Too dim for the slotted spoon but pretty impressed with the image of the chimneys using the binocular method.
A grey board being held up close. There is a small image of a blurry crescent sun partly behind the shadow of an upside down chimney stack.

Blessed eclipse day! I was very lucky to see the 2017 eclipse from the mountains of central Idaho. Not looking quite so promising for Edinburgh this evening.
Composite image of various stages of an eclipse including the ring of totality in the centre. It is in a dim sky that looks like sunset above some forested mountains.

Took my four-month-old to an early morning screening. He loved it, although he thought leaving out the Polyphemus "I am no-one" gag really undermined the wittiness of the Homeric Odysseus. (they obviously turn the volume down and lights up for baby showings)

Teaching magma mingling to a group of American geologists on Drumadoon point in the blazing sunshine. Geology is pretty neat.
A group of geologists crowd round a fallen block of rock on a grassy and rocky slope by the sea. Behind them is a large cliff showing columnar jointing. Nice day for it.

Happy 300th birthday James Hutton!🎉🎂⛏️ Our NMS birthday party was complete with Arran granite trifle and unconformity cake.
Four geologists sitting on a sofa in front of a spread of coffee and cake. One cake has candles spelling 300. Behind them is a portrait of James Hutton with a party hat and tooter, and a Happy Birthday banner.A cross section of a cake being sliced. The bottom layer has slabs of chocolate cake arranged vertically. On top is a layer of flat vanilla sponge. The whole thing is topped with buttercream and strawberries.

Unless I'm mistaken, a bathroom with a symbol of a man on the door isn't automatically a 'single-sex service'. So providers/employers will have to make it explicit that their facilities are not for the use of trans people before even beginning to think about enforcement.

Olympic curling has to be the sporting highlight of the Scottish geological calendar. 🥌 All the stones come from Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde. The distinctive black spots are (mostly) the very weird and rare amphibole arfvedsonite. #ThinSectionThursday

One for my geology [ex-]colleagues. Left hand: shortbread made by a retired industrial chemist. Right hand: Millstone grit, probably from the Grassington grit or Upper Howgate Edge grit formation. The photographer (another geologist) was entertained by the similar appearance.
Old bloke holding two chunks of beige-coloured stuff. One is weathered black except for a recently broken surface; the other is beige all over. The bloke looks far too cheerful for the weather, which is clearly shite.
