How AI Keeps Europe Hooked on US Cloud

→ Build compute for inference → you risk subsidising capacity for the only customers large enough to fill it: the leading US labs. This is also why CADA misses the problem: it treats cloud as generic capacity, with generic supply and demand. It isn't euaipolicymonitor.substack.com/p/how-ai-kee...

How AI Keeps Europe Hooked on US Cloud
Europe's AI sovereignty cannot be separated from its reliance on three US cloud providers. Boosting supply and demand separately won't solve it.

→ Boost demand for frontier AI → you boost demand for proprietary models bundled with the dominant clouds. → Build gigafactories → you train models that then run on hyperscaler infrastructure.

European AI sovereignty can't be separated from the continent's dependence on three US cloud providers: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. The uncomfortable part: every route Europe takes to build its way out risks deepening the dependence it's meant to cure.

There's a lot of pressure to drastically increase Europe's compute capacity, from CADA to the Europe 2031 scenario. The assumption underneath: building more capacity buys more independence. Our new piece with @techpolicypress.bsky.social takes that apart.

It's not all doom and gloom - but we have to be real (and honest with voters!) about the trade-offs involved. Instead, the EU's AI strategy is build around assumptions and premises that are rarely mentioned to scrutinized

The core argument is: Europe's AI market is deeply entangled with the ecosystems of dominant US players, in ways that boosting both supply and demand alone cannot disentangle. As a result, interventions that seek to secure sovereignty in AI risk leading to much more entrenched dependence.

Great piece by @frederike.bsky.social & @leevisaari.eurosky.social on the risks of building "European AI" on top of foreign models. One thing I'd add: digital decade goals indirectly incentivise member states to ignore it in pursuit of AI adoption and "unicorns". www.techpolicy.press/europes-ai-s...

Because the question that's more important than abstract sovereignty isn't how many companies Europe has. It's where the value they create actually ends up. Even when Europe builds its own AI, that value often flows elsewhere. Follow here: euaipolicymonitor.substack.com/p/ai-soverei...

Theft on top of theft.
“AI is already changing sex work and our future relationships in so many ways”, documentary filmmaker Naomi Pallas tells Dazed. Pallas is the director of the award-winning short film Clankers, which explores the rise of AI sex influencers and the blurring of consent. For the documentary, Pallas made her own pregnant AI sex worker after attending courses run predominantly by men about how to make them and develop a unique niche. What Pallas discovered through attending these courses was that these men were essentially stealing the content of real sex workers and deepfaking their likenesses to make their AI influencers. “When I saw this, I just thought, ‘Oh my God. They are trying to get the means of production back from women’”.
