Spent the evening in largely car-free Utrecht and sad to see the devastating impact the exclusion of cars has had on the bars, cafes and restaurants, and the liveliness of the city centre.
An awful lot of people sitting in outside terraces in central Utrecht Dozens and dozens of people in canalside cages and bars in Utrecht Still more people in cafes and bars in central Utrecht A side street full of bars and cafes, in turn full of people, in central Utrecht

I cycled to work the longer way today. At 5.5 miles, that's further than most UK car trips - yet it took me just 22 minutes We urgently need to unblock and enable the millions of short active trips that are being blocked every day because of our collective car dependency. Our health depends on it

Today was one of my favourite lectures, on how evidence influences debates. Case A: 79 people died as a consequence of smart motorways (2010-2024). That's sufficient to pause the policy. Case B: In the first year of the Welsh 20mph scheme 900 fewer people were injured. There's still contestation.

Trudeau named not reforming the voting system as his big regret. Starmer shouldn't repeat his mistake. The stakes are now much higher than just who wins the next election. When there's such a disconnect between how people vote and who wins seats, trust in democracy is at risk.

UK could raise nearly £2bn by taxing SUVs in line with European countries, study shows
Thinktank says an ‘SUV loophole’ means UK buyers pay up to 20 times less tax on biggest models than in neighbouring nations Taxing Britain’s SUVs in line with other European countries could raise almost £2bn a year for the public finances, research has shown. The Transport & Environment thinktank has urged the government to use the autumn budget to bring in a levy on the largest vehicles, which it said would reflect the damage they caused to the environment and infrastructure. There are “political people” here who tell our elected leaders they shouldn’t talk about safe, protected bike infrastructure, because it’s “not popular.” Every poll shows that investing in bike infrastructure IS popular here. And even if it wasn’t, ITS SMART PUBLIC POLICY. Stop letting them win.
