AI recomps and ports are cursed. if you’ve done several other projects and use it to speed up your process, I’m less skeptical, but all these people who have never touched C professionally are suddenly making mountains of slop ports, what a nightmare.

Also, before anyone understandably asks, Grimdoomer's bona fides are legit and include major contributions to other scenes over the years, including the PS2 as well. And while it's unfortunate the code will remain closed source, it's hard to argue with the reasoning. I'd likely do the same here.
A screenshot from the Github page for Grimdoomer's Xbox 360 softmod that says the following:

Where's the Source Code?

I have decided not to release the source code for this for a few reasons:

Everything I make and release I do for free in my own time. This is a hobby for me and something I do for fun. Given the state of software development I no longer feel the need to release the source code for everything I make just so people can make a million forks of it and kill any motivation I have to work on it. I make this stuff for myself and not anyone else.
The world doesn't need 15 "slopsoftmods". It took a LOT of work to not only develop this exploit chain but also package it into an easy to use installer and do testing to try and make sure it wouldn't break someone's console. Making these modifications to your console can cause it to stop working, and I don't see why someone who doesn't understand the risks, work it took to make, or how the OS functions, should be able to clone a turn-key repository, make one change, slap their name on it, and tell people "go download my softmod".

It's inevitable that people will just reverse engineer, modify, and repackage my work as their own. While my work may not be "perfect, bug free, etc.", I have taken utmost care to make sure it's unlikely to cause any harm to your console and that you should always be able to boot into retail mode to recover from anything that goes wrong. Other people copying my work may not do the same. If you don't trust the people making the modifications don't install them.

Books on the go in the early 90s: the Sony Data Discman. Just been reading about this while downloading a 0mhz collection version of the books and a software reader. Released in late 1991 and early 1992 for $499.99, it had a backlit LCD and used the EB format stored on 3" CDs in hard-case caddies.
From the Museum of Information site: a photo of the box for the Electronic Book Player DD-8, the Discman, with a photo of the unit itself and a hard caddy CD next to it.Also from the same site: an overhead viw of the discman with a Pocket Interpreter disc have inserted into a caddy. From the same site: a photo of the Data Discman showing its little querty rubber keyboard, direction keys and YES NO buttons. Plus the LCD screen with quite a clear blue-line artwork of a street scene, the title page for the Pocket Interpreter software.

that sort of technological solutionism always reminds of this interview with joseph weizenbaum — creator of ELIZA, the first chatbot! — on the role of computers in education ebiquity.umbc.edu/paper/html/i...
Q: What, if anything, do you think should be the role of the computer in education?

I'll tell you my reaction to that question without answering it directly. There's a Russian joke that goes something like this: Two people are standing in a very large breadline in Moscow, and they're talking about the fact that the harvest failed once more and that's why there's a shortage of bread, and one of them says to the other, "You know, it's all the fault of the Jews and the bicyclists." The other one says, "Why the bicyclists?" and the first one answers, "Why the Jews?"

You might have said "What is the role of computers and bicycles in education?" Then I would have said, "Why the bicycles?" and you "Why the computer?"

A: Yours is an often-asked question. In a sense, it is upside-down. You start with the instrument; the question makes the assumption that of course the computer is good for something in education, that it is the solution to some educational problem. Specifically, [your] question is, what is it good for?People come to MIT and to other places, people from all sorts of establishments - the medical establishment, the legal establishment, the education establishment, and in effect they say, "You have there a very wonderful instrument which solves a lot of problems. Surely there must be problems in my establishment - in this case, the educational establishment, for which your wonderful instrument is a solution. Please tell me for what problems your wonderful instrument is a solution.

The questioning should start the other way - it should perhaps start with the question of what education is supposed to accomplish in the first place. Then perhaps [one should] state some priorities - it should accomplish this, it should do that, it should do the other thing. Then one might ask, in terms of what it's supposed to do, what are the priorities? What are the most urgent problems? And once one has identified the urgent problems, then one can perhaps say, "Here is a problem for which the computer seems to be well-suited." I think that's the way it has to begin.

Btw from the player perspective there's a freedom in knowing a game will never be changed again. If you like it in its eventual end state, you have the good luck of being able to play a game you like forever, and that's no small thing. None of the time you put into it will be wasted by later changes
