kith crit: cohort two
a grassroots critique workshop for the trans, Crip, queer, and sick

What: a FREE, eight week, needs informed critique workshop beginning at the end of September 2026. In these sessions writers will come together across genres to challenge each other; connect with other trans, Crip, queer, and sick creatives; and develop the skills necessary to support themselves and others through the process of critique.

Who: kith crit is open to trans, Crip, queer, and sick writers of all genres. cohort two will comprise two distinct critique spaces: one general audience; and one transfeminine led, and exclusive. While anyone is welcome to apply, we’re particularly interested in those who have been systemically or functionally excluded from traditional lit ed opportunities. Applications will serve as assertions of eligibility.

How: Send a brief statement outlining the reasons for your interest and a writing sample to wim@kithbooks.com by August 31th.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

In the end, its all needles and process. An ink cartridge or an elixir are interchangeable, someone’s mother is still screaming “irreversible-!” anyway. I still leave changed, a little more tied to this flesh-mass-thing, a little less static and, dare I say, ecstatic? Regardless, those who love us will gush over our new chitin, asking about the growing exoskeleton. It reminds me of being fourteen, doodling wishes into my skin. I dreamed that when they’d seep into my bloodstream they’d become reality, as if it was that easy. In the end, we are all eternally morphing, chameleons shedding skins we’ve long outgrown and still we are shifting.

In the end, its all
needles and process. The pain
is secondary.

Alex Cregan (he/ae) is a writer of all forms, master of none, born, raised and living in the north of Ireland. A lot of his work is influenced by being trans, being disabled, existing in a body, feeling emotions too strongly and overusing weird metaphors to explain these things. He's been published in multiple journals, including Abridged 0-101 REBECCA and Faerie Press debut anthology Hide and Seek. Alex is also a spoken word performer and has performed in Sole Purpose Productions' The Pride Monologues and Bounce Art Festival 2024's Not Your Pity Party. A new outfit, new body
Built for battle.

To land a blow and save the day.

Usagi as a burnout dropout, past her prime,
A cigarette between her teeth, a cat that only cries.
I imagine myself in her body
But instead the light
Grants me my desire
For a boy body with all the frills she'd been provided.
My desire for a night
Slept between clean sheets
Restfully
As I scream and vanquish
