calling my doctors to the carpet in my best teacher voice: who's ready for a story? let's learn about sloths.
Finally, after months and months of despair, Emma gave up. Fine, she’d climb a damn tree, just to shut people up. She found one in her parents' backyard and started to pull herself up, her claws acting as hooks. It was surprisingly easy, and it felt weirdly good. Unlike trying to do dishes, her body was made for this. She hung by her claws off a branch and took the best nap she’d had in months.

It was hard to wrap her head around, if she were honest. Serious people did not climb trees. Serious people weren’t sloths, right? And it was unbelievably weird, and if there was one thing she wasn’t, it was weird. But it felt so good.

The next month she climbed up again, and spent the night.

ADVANCE PRAISE

"Janakiraman’s debut collection, Bodies in Phototaxis, immediately activates ideas of light (as the titular phenomenon, ‘phototaxis,’ implies), through self-clarifications and revelations. Janakiraman’s poetic obsessions span grammatical structures and functions, gender, romance, race, religion, and the body. The light graces all of these things—not just through mere existence, but also through stubborn insistence: “he crushes a slant of light into my lap,” Janakiraman writes, showing how occurrences of light come from the intimacy of the viscera because we make it, we absorb it, and we release it. One line begins, “There is a sin in wanting.” Through this expression of want, Janakiraman has proven to be an incredibly thoughtful poet: this debut demands the light to shine on it, showcasing the rawest form of desire and (un-)fulfillment one can encounter."

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day. As we reflect on the history and ongoing legacy of colonialism and the residential school system, and in support of the journey toward reconciliation, we would like to highlight a few of the Indigenous literature titles (1/8)
A collage of book cover thumbnails against an abstract orange background. Small footer text lists the publisher, Arsenal Pulp Press, and their website, arsenal pulp [dot] com, and in the top-right of the background is their logo mark (a circle with an off-centre jagged cross cut through) in semi-transparent orange. The books featured are as follows: “The 500 Years of Indigenous Resistance Comic Book: Revised and Expanded” by Gord Hill; “Tsqelmucwílc” by Celia Haig-Brown, Randy Fred, Garry Gottfriedson, and the KIRS Survivors; “Finding Otipemisiwak” by Andrea Currie; “Buffalo Is the New Buffalo” by Chelsea Vowel; “a body more tolerable” by jaye simpson; and “Together We Drum, Our Hearts Beat as One” by Willie Poll, illustrated by Chief Lady Bird.

While I fear the destruction Trump and his oligarch co-conspirators will impose over the next few years, the greater threat is that our descent into tech fascism will be spearheaded by liberal politicians who, co-opted and corrupted by Silicon Valley money, will abandon democracy without much of a fight. Trump is a symptom of a far greater disease in our system, a disease that will continue to grow and metastasize after he dies. The billionaires of Silicon Valley have a plan to succeed. They understand that a political system dependent on checks from wealthy corporations and individuals is inherently tilted in their favor. They seek to innovate this corruption: to buy the levers of democracy and use them to destroy the entire system. This is the logical end point of the predicament. The survival of the United States has relied on a delicate balance of powers, and that balance has now been tested. It has failed catastrophically, exposing a major flaw in systems that have proven shockingly weak in the face of billionaire-powered fascist power grabs. Fixing this flaw will require us to adopt an urgent spirit of innovation and prepare for a long journey ahead. The Nerd Reich: Silicon valley fascism and the war on democracy

Volo, the main character of the titular story, stands in front of a window, the light of a full moon revealing their bones.
“So. Mr. Pacey, I’m here to offer you an opportunity. I can let you continue on the…trajectory you’re currently on, and who knows? Maybe you manage to grab the window frame and stop your fall, though it would be quite impressive for a man as drunk as you. So. i'm not afraid of dying i'm afraid of dying & not staying dead. i'm afraid of spontaneous human combustion & i'm afraid of proving myself right. i'm afraid of the mess that's been made of my thoughts. - INWARDS / INNARDS, @drdissociation.bsky.social www.kithbooks.com/shop/p/prymeopen

New poem up on the Some Words Lit board in which I argue that deer hunting is ontologically sapphic: somewords.boards.net/thread/209/b...
An excerpt from the poem "Bullet, to the Deer" as published in the message board/lit journal Some Words Lit. It reads:

"Bullet, to the Deer

Your teeth found a clutch of clover
Your tongue a giving river
Your black nose an interesting smell under the bark
of something that fell before both of us
got here.

You closed your eyes in perfect stillness,
your body rigid with peace.
When you found a clutch of clover,
I found you."
