Anybody got some decent German-language analysis on the future of Chancellor Merz? By decent I do not mean “this is my political bias so this is what will happen”. But more like “the trade-offs are this and this.” Cc @aphclarkson.bsky.social

I visited for the first time in nearly 40 years earlier this year, having spent my teen years there but having been eager to “get away” for university. I was surprised that I found it to be quite a charming city.

When I was in sixth grade, we were literally taught in school that fossil fuel scarcity was a big threat to civilization as we knew it. Not climate change, not pollution, but these companies running out of oil to drill. Just a thought about how much corporations shape our sense of what threatens us.

there is a certain type of personality that simply loves to be the bearer of bad news but perpetually couches it in "being honest" or "the only adult in the room". it is because they enjoy hurting people but want to be able to maintain the moral high ground. after all, they're just the messenger!

I dunno know but for me this is plainly bollocks. Who is going to read this stuff? If my eyes glaze over by para 2 I know it is ai-generated. I can’t get to the end of it. It is always far longer than it needs to be, repeats itself too much and is often just a bit too sassy.

So, don't share your darkest fears like a mantra. They disempower and deflate others AND you! The nihilism of presenting him as inevitable IS their strategy. I know we can beat Farage, because we ARE beatING him. His numbers are shrinking. Now is the time for shoulders to the wheel - not apathy. 3/3

For decades the Sachsen Anhalt CDU played to the instincts of a substantially radicalised population in the Land rather than challenging it out of the assumption that its grip on power was permanent. That allowed space in discourse to remain open for the Far Right. Now here we are.

I wonder whether the “young people drink less, have less sex and are generally miserable” can be correlated to this? (Actually I think it might be more the “can’t afford to live anywhere but with the parents” thing.)

Farming and fishing = conservative voters + fish sovereignty is a big thing for Iceland (nearly went to war with the UK in 1970s over fishing). The EU focus on it is imho because for any country “our land” is a sentimental topic. But I also think it might be because France has such enormous farms!

Yes when I said “I find”, I realise there may still be lots of people I don’t see. I think it is a combo of no algo and people forgetting to RT so you don’t get the discovery here. Plus lots of long opinions going to Substack.

So what do I do: mute Space Karen, block/mute everyone else in that camp and stay focused on work: Cyprus, energy, regional security. And of course spend no money there. Bottom line is if you live in a big country you have more choices but it takes more than big countries to make a global platform.
