London born, long term resident in Italy. Was an architect, once, but not in the way you'd think! Serious interests are many, and often political. Silly interests are cats, The Archers, and Formula 1.

I'm not pleased by Burnham's (reported) position on Man City. I was impressed by his speech, happy about his proposals (if a bit vague), but then today he comes out with a defence of the Man City owners because they (I paraphrase) threw a lot of money at Manchester.

I have sometimes disparagingly said of a designer outfit "that woman is wearing curtain material", but never before have I seen "the sofa look". Did she not read the "couch posts"?

This month, we’re doing something special. @parismarx.com’s new book HYPERSCALE is out on October 20, so we’re bringing back DATA VAMPIRES. In Episode 4, Paris explores the future envisioned by the tech elite — and how hostile it is for the rest of us. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/347_...

Hysteria about AI doesn't really 'compute'. AI is an unreliable tool, encouraged by 'line managers', who are encouraged to embrace it by their bosses, and when they interrogate their 'coal face' the response is less than meh. This is in a field (data analysis) which one would think was AI's forte.

Excitement today. We had a big thunderstorm at 6am and a seriously big electricity cable got struck, with spectacular sparking and electrical smells, bit of soot on the external render, but we didn't lose power. Was it my job to report it? I got through the AI assistant and spoke to a human. 1/2

I was surprised that the UK government today proposed/implemented some sanctions on occupied West Bank Palestinian territories. I had assumed that such sanctions had been in place for decades.

#Newsnight was quite interesting tonight. Ed Conway, who I admire for his writing about 'hardware' (Material World etc.) came across as very bright, but the ghastly Camilla Tominey is even worse in speech than she is when she scribbles.

Bluesky's 'Trending' has been a bit peculiar for a week or two, but tonight's offering seems to have been served up by an illiterate bot, at least a year out of date on the renaming idiocy. (And kudos to anyone who can parse sentence number one.)

To the bewilderment of my cat I am half watching the European athletics. Why is no country (with the exception of Italy, and the Netherlands who at least have orange tops) wearing recognisable national 'colours'? To the casual viewer it makes life difficult - like green painted Ferraris.

Tik Tok wants me to install it, show it a photo of my cat, choose a sample dance video and it will then 'make the cat dance'. Is this why we are building data centres? This makes Nero's fiddling seem entirely benign.

Yet more IT hell today - the wireless adapter on the resuscitated computer died. Never mind, connect it to a LAN port on the modem (much ad hoc wiring involved). Just for interest I speed checked the connection, and was surprised to find it slightly slower on download, and much slower on upload.

Right. 17th thing has gone wrong. Channel4 (in Chrome, using a VPN) is getting shitty about ad blockers (which I don't have any of) and asking me to allow DRM content in Chrome settings., for which I can't find a switch. Anybody else suddenly got a problem with C4?

I'm amused by the political commentators getting their knickers in a twist about this northern Number 10. It's incredibly patronising, on Newsnight they even referred to a 'fake replica No 10 door'. I'm okay with replica - but they needed to add the derogative 'fake'.
