My mother-in-law, who hadn't been on a bicycle since the 1980s, visited us last year and we biked to toddler swimming class together. She's now biking 40 minutes to work everyday in Montreal because she has a separated bike lane the whole way there.

We do people constantly frame the security report about ecological collapse as being about climate change? It is misleading and ignores the fact of biodiversity loss & ecosystem degradation as an existential threat in its own right www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Why is the UK’s suppressed climate national security report significant?
Warnings about the catastrophic effects of vital ecosystems collapsing were not published under previous prime minister

They tried their best to make the idea of having more things we want nearby, more options and choices in our cities and neighborhoods, seem like a conspiracy. But never forget what the REAL urban conspiracy has been — moving everything further away and making us car dependent. #1HourCityConspiracy

"It's a Magafication of transport": exactly. The traditional american male ego, desperate after ½ century of gradually losing privileges, has fortified itself in these rolling castles, battle tanks of the road, with apparently sociopathic behaviour, esp. in US and UK.

"Cultural monuments" importes through "loopholes": Yes, let's liberate Europe from these monsters. SUV: Essentially an artefact of a great american cultural tragedy. The traditionally bloated american male ego retreating into rolling fortresses, as its privileges are painfully being rolled back.

READ more about the “Dare, Able, Invite” framework, which was developed by NS’ Mark van Hagen and Goudappel’s Bas Govers, who applied the Dutch Railways’ pyramid of customer needs to cycling policy: www.scribd.com/document/438...
A graphic shows three stages through which cycling cities must evolve: people must first dare to cycle (safe and reliable), then be able to cycle (quick and convenient), before they are invited to cycle (attractive and joyful).

Exactly. Cycling infrastructure: Build it, and they will come. NL is the primary proof, and DK may still be 2nd (although I spend my life urging for improval....) but we see this all over Europe now. And globally. China may be winning this race also, at least they seem to be trying.

I live like this, cycling everywhere, occasionally cycling to the metro. And it certainly does not feel like a sacrifice. The point of not harming the climate is just an extra little feel good factor - on top of keeping fit, saving money, seeing the world around me more freely, and enjoying travel.
