Personally, I'd like a Director General who doesn't cream-their-jeans at the prospect of reducing the BBC to an employee-less, AI powered, app that nobody downloads. But I'm weird that way.

TV has forgotten the little guy
A consumer-rights movement that depends on going viral is no substitute for a broadcaster deciding, week after week, that sticking up for the little guy is worth the trouble

That’s Life! was just incredible. Its two most famous moments are a man being movingly celebrated by the now grown Jewish children he got out of Nazi Germany & a dog saying “sausages”. No other programme has ever had that range.

TL;DR I’m reliable, meet deadlines and can move comfortably between newsroom style political writing, cultural essays, reviews and narrative history. Below are some excellent references from some excellent people…
‘Finlay’s writing is incisive and insightful. He has an unusual breadth of knowledge that is a constant surprise, and writes with conciseness, wit and sharpness.’ Gareth Roberts - columnist for the Spectator and the Telegraph
‘Finlay McLaren’s unique take on vintage television is always a joy to read. Written with an affection that doesn’t blind his critical faculties, his articles for the Lion and Unicorn cover a wide range of programming, and are embellished with original observations and underpinned by historical context.' Dr. Josephine Botting - Curator of Fiction at the BFI National Archive‘Finlay McLaren is an exciting new voice in political and cultural commentary. His sharp and lucid writing brims with insight and originality as he ponders the collective nervous breakdown that is 21st century Britain. With an eye for the absurd and an ear for cant, McLaren is fast becoming a treasured guide through this age of decline and delusion.’ Stephen Daisley - Columnist for the Spectator and the Daily Mail
