This work was led by two brilliant (former and current) PhD students @ameliejoly.bsky.social and @lucasrebiffe.bsky.social, co-led with @francoisleulier.bsky.social. We're grateful to all colleagues who helped us achieve this milestone. Preprint, data and code are open. Happy to answer questions.

The same goes for the spread around a mean. Under scarcity the females did not simply mature later, they matured far less predictably: the timing went from tightly grouped to scattered. Variability is not noise around the result. Here it was part of the result.

Sex is often handled as a nuisance variable, something to hold constant or to average out. Our results say it is a variable in its own right, and one that responds to the environment. Using both sexes is not a box to tick. It is where the biology is.

Here is the part I would like people to take away. Had we studied males only, we would have written: low protein stunts growth. Females only: low protein delays puberty. Both true. Neither is the finding. The finding is the distance between them.

And yet both end up paying in the same place. When we let them breed, the difficulty in both sexes is getting a pregnancy started. Once started, litters are normal. Two opposite strategies, the same wall at the end. For females, it lifts once food returns.
Dot plot of conception rate per mating cycle in males paired with hyperfertile females, control versus low-protein diet. Each dot is one male. The control mean sits at about 77% and the low-protein mean at about 47%, with wide error bars that do not overlap at the means. Odds ratio 3.76, 95% interval 1.24 to 11.38, p = 0.019.Dot plot of conception rate per cycle in females, classified by the diet they were actually on at fertilisation. Each dot is one female. The control mean sits at about 65%, the low-protein mean at about 26%. Several low-protein females never conceived, shown as dots at 0%. Odds ratio 5.20, 95% interval 1.55 to 17.44, p = 0.008.

Females do the opposite. They protect their growth and postpone puberty instead, waiting until they reach the right body size. One sex keeps the timetable and pays elsewhere. The other keeps the body and pays in time.
Kaplan-Meier curve of puberty onset in females, cumulative percentage against age from day 21 to 56. The control curve (dark teal) rises steeply and reaches nearly 100% by day 35. The low-protein curve (pale teal) rises slowly and has only reached about 75% by day 56, the end of the study. Hazard ratio 0.11, 95% interval 0.05 to 0.28, p < 0.001. A table below gives the number still at risk in each group.

Reproduction goes the other way, and this is where the two sexes clearly part. Males reach puberty on schedule, but their chemical signalling, the scent proteins they put in their urine, goes nearly silent. They mature on time and advertise much less.
Horizontal bar chart titled "Mup cluster", showing eleven major urinary protein genes. Every bar points left, meaning lower expression on the low-protein diet, ranging from about a 1.3 to a 7 on a log2 scale, that is roughly two-fold to over a hundred-fold. All bars carry one to three asterisks.

Is this just testosterone disappearing? We removed the testes at weaning to find out. Part of the liver change does depend on male hormones. The growth and metabolic collapse does not. It happens just the same without testes.
Two side-by-side line charts of body length from day 21 to 56 in males only: sham-operated on the left, castrated at weaning on the right. In both panels the control-diet curve rises well above the low-protein curve, and the two gaps are the same size. Asterisks mark the diet difference at every age from day 28 in both panels. Subtitle: diet by surgery by time interaction, p = 0.66.

That asymmetry is the heart of it. The two sexes do not meet in the middle. The male moves and the female holds her ground. Under scarcity, the male is the one that bends. The female pattern looks like the cheaper one to build.

And in the liver, one of the most sex-specific organs in the body, with hundreds of genes read differently in males and females. Under low protein, the male liver drifts toward the female profile. The female liver barely moves.
Box plot of a liver "feminization score" in four groups, where 0 is the typical control male liver and 1 the typical control female liver. Control males sit at 0. Low-protein males rise to about 0.75, crossing the halfway line. Control and low-protein females both sit at about 1 and are indistinguishable. Sex-by-diet interaction p < 0.001; the female diet comparison gives p = 0.902.

The same thing happens for metabolism: how much energy they burn, how they handle sugar, what they store in the liver. Put all of it together and the male and female profiles, normally far apart, end up nearly on top of one another.
Scatter plot titled "Somatic sexual dimorphism compression". Each dot is one mouse, positioned by a discriminant analysis of five growth and metabolic traits; ellipses show each group's 95% region and diamonds their centres. The control-diet male ellipse sits alone on the right. The three other groups overlap on the left. A long arrow labelled D = 4.72 spans the male-to-female distance on the control diet; a short arrow labelled D = 1.28 spans it on the low-protein diet. Footnote: 73% compression, permutation p = 0.0001.

On a normal diet, males and females separate as they grow. Males end up longer, heavier, with longer bones. On the low-protein diet, the two curves lie on top of each other. The difference between the sexes did not shrink. It never appeared.
Line chart of body length in centimetres from postnatal day 21 to 56, four groups. On the control diet, the male curve (dark gold) climbs above the female curve (dark teal) from day 28 onward and the gap keeps widening to day 56. On the low-protein diet, the male and female curves (pale gold and pale teal, dashed) run together as a single line for the whole period. Asterisks mark within-sex diet differences, hash marks a significant sex-by-diet interaction from day 35.

So we did something simple. We fed young mice a diet where only one thing changed, the amount of protein, from weaning to young adulthood. And we kept males and females side by side at every step, which is still not the default in animal physiology.

The starting point is a human puzzle. Wherever childhood undernutrition is measured, boys are hit harder than girls. It shows up in survey after survey, on every continent. Nobody knows why, and nobody knows when in development it happens.

Filipe De Vadder @filipedevadder.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
🚨PREPRINT ALERT How different are males and females? In physiology we mostly treat that as a fixed property of a species, something to control for. In mice, we found it is not fixed at all. It depends on what the animal ate while growing up.

C’est marrant cette propension des défenseurs de la SCIENCE (TM) à demander des comptes au CNRS quand un sociologue publie de la merde antivax mais jamais quand une anthropologue sort des trucs racistes et islamophobes.

Few statisticians know that Frank Yates, pioneer of experimental design, is responsible for the annoying practice of indicating 3 tiers of statistical significance by stars (*p ≤ 0.05, **p ≤0.01, ***p ≤ 0.001). He soon regretted it and “vehemently opposed its unthinking use”. And here we are.

Stop dividing organ weights by body weight. Ratios don't control for body size. They can create fake effects AND hide real ones. The stats literature has known this for decades. We built a free tool to fix it. 🧵
