I am so very sad to hear this. I never met her, but as another Canadian who fell sideways into public health emergency work via SARS, she felt like a hometown hero to me, and I always read her excellent coverage with interest and always learned things. She'll be missed.

Ah, you've caught me out as a Canadian Anglican whose knowledge of British (let alone Anglican church) history came mostly from YA books about the Blitz, high school Shakespeare & my father's Beyond the Fringe albums. Though I did once have instant coffee in the Archbishop of Canterbury's kitchen.

No, Scott and Garnsworthy, but I'm very amused that there are others for whom this is a plausible scenario!

Quite tricky not simply exploding with rage at the callous cruelty & gleeful stupidity of all this *gestures at everything* isn’t it? Difficult to keep from bursting into searing flames of apocalyptic anger & spontaneously spattering one’s atoms across the known universe like furious meat confetti

My new novel is out a week from today — tough timing because of the election & uh, you know, the world. With book reviews an extinct species, it's hard to get the word out. So tell your friends! Meanwhile, I've started the next one, folkish horror set in a bog at a remote Maine hunting camp. Onward!

My parents' house was rewired by 2 Anglican archbishops, & it may only have been the grace of god that kept it from burning down, according to the real electrician who worked on it next. It had been a *long* time since their graces had worked on building sites to pay their way through seminary.

People at my work keep saying, "Well, I'm just talking out loud now," and it immediately makes me wish they weren't. Sir, that is simply WHAT TALKING IS. You mean 'thinking out loud.'

Oh! Those were the editions my mother read to me. She got a chance to interview LeGuin when I was ~8, and I BEGGED her to take me with her, which wasn't an option. But she agreed to ask LeGuin if Ged was pronounced with with hard 'g' (my theory) or a soft one (hers). I was validated - hard g!

You’re Getting In My Hair, created c.1968 by Mavis Oultram, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital, Surrey, where she was compelled to live. This is one of a small number of surviving works, which all feature the motif of eyes. No biographical information is currently known to us
Painting of snaking flowering brown tendrils of human hairs with blue human eyes stashed on the unfinished head of a figure with only the eyes and brows partially painted in, the rest of the face sketched out in pale pencil but almost invisible

A heady 70s selection of rotten little poppets and craft creeps from The Big Book of Dolls by Mabs Taylor
Photo from a 1970s craft book with a selection of white ragdolls with no clothes on against a black background, all quite endearingly amateur looking, some with rancid vibes Photo from a 1970s craft book of a four faced mr punch puppet dressed in red and yellow felt, photographed against a black background giving extremely bad energy but in a good way

My old place had that and we stumbled on an old university lecture-hall map which worked great. It was in Cyrillic so we didn't know exactly what it communicated, but a couple of times delivery or odd job guys turned out to be, you know, former soviet history profs and got excited about it.

Painting created c.1950s, in the art therapy studio at Netherne hospital in Surrey, by an individual who was compelled to live there, whose identity is currently unknown to us. This image is from art therapist Edward Adamson’s lecture slides: the original is missing, presumed lost
Painting of three dark haired white woman, painted in a limited palette of black and red, on the left one wears a grilled dress and dances with a tambourine in her hand, in the centre a naked woman stands in a black box, appearing to be on fire as a red snake like form connects her to the figure on the right who is dressed in a skirt and jumper wrapped in its coils, she looks toward the central figure appearing coolly amused

Farewell today to the high priestess of polka dots, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (1929-2026). Her work was unforgettable and for her, a means to survival. It’s playful, psychedelic, compulsive, beautiful and slightly unsettling all at once. Into infinity and beyond Yayoi! 🔴🟡⚫️
