I reread the whole thing earlier this year and was wowed all over again. The way she deliberately takes on all these commonplace ideas in historical romance, and the way she follows through on "this is what happens when you marry a courtesan," it's incredible work

Many wide authors are having problems with their free books reverting to paid on Amazon. When I checked yesterday, I had problems with both of my permafrees: Grumpy Fake Boyfriend had reverted in the US (but not Canada) and Her Big City Neighbor had reverted in Canada (but not the US).

I do think that's one of the most common problems in writing sex, a sort of sports announcer play-by-play approach, lol but again, people are so different, and there are probably plenty of people out there who find a written enumeration of acts to be a sexy and enjoyable read

this one I’m *almost* on board with because more characters usually means more, ah, coordination? and that is an opportunity for the sort of character work I’m into. it could be lacking or poorly done, I suppose

well if they do, they are wrong. imo this is one of the fundamental appeals of sex scenes *in romance novels*? like, if I want to watch strangers fuck, porn exists

in theory I understand why people might've rated Star Shipped as not that hot—it's light on specifics—but Charlie saying "real nice" to Simon is off the charts TO ME

like, okay, is the author a good prose stylist? how deep is the characters' interiority? is there any tension in the scene? this is the kind of freak I am

yes, this is it for me too. I've come to view myself as sort of an outlier because I don't *get* the way a lot of people post about sex in books—and like, people should do what they want, I'm not judging!—but it does nothing for me to see e.g. "he ties her up" on a trope graphic or whatever

impressed by the number of romance authors, reviewers, and readers interviewed in this article! my own view is that this is a fun thing to chat about, but there will never be a useful scale because what people find hot is so personal. you're just gonna have to use words to describe it

it's so frustrating. and then for shows (books, etc) to pretend like there's nothing to discuss after the pregnancy is discovered—no options here!—feels like malice at this point and like, surprises do happen irl! people can be ignorant or forgetful or whatever. but we are talking about FICTION

yes! there are ways to arrive at that plot point that are not "silly girl brain"

Felicia Davin @feliciadavin.com · 01/10/2026
your grown MEN characters who are having regular PIV sex should also be thinking about this if they are not assholes. but that is another conversation. right now we are talking about where "girl math" has brought us. I DON'T LIKE IT

Felicia Davin @feliciadavin.com · 01/10/2026
PSA for romance authors and also the Ted Lasso writers room apparently, but if your "accidental/surprise pregnancy" storyline relies on a grown woman never thinking about her own risk of pregnancy while she's regularly having PIV sex, I'm out

oh it’s just very very full of cars and small children, the absolute worst combination! people do generally drive slowly but I live in fear (and if my child has a snack, he is very snack-focused and won’t watch where he is going; I’m also like this but have learned not to eat while crossing traffic)

my child is furious with me because I would not give him a snack while we were walking through the deathtrap parking lot at youth soccer, and instead made him wait until we were in the car. he ate his granola bar while sobbing with rage. it’s been 45 minutes and I am NOT forgiven

on my mind today because I'm writing a bonus story for my unpublished draft! every time I describe the plot to another human, it becomes clear that it will not be a short story, but something in the neighborhood of 10k words it's crucial that I forget this information. it's gonna be so easy

Why you should use a PHYSICAL scene separator (e.g. asterisks) in your books instead of an empty space: 1) Some ereader / app somewhere may simply not show the empty space. 2) Some people read on devices with the text REALLY BIG. Your chance of the empty space being at the end of the screen is...
