Why aren’t we talking about child poverty?
Child poverty was a hot topic in the last three elections. But it’s slipped off the agenda, even though it’s got worse. What’s going on?

I've spent a lot of time debunking claims that way overstate the migration impacts of wealth taxes. But fear not - if we put our minds to it, I do believe we can design a wealth tax high enough to get Elon to flee the country

We’re going to see a surge in attack ads and misinformation as we get closer to the election. The parties on the right have money and a long history of this, and now that they are scared of losing it’s going to get worse.

Nothing angers me more than when a rich person says they are happy to be taxed more and people say “why don’t you write a check to the government” motherfucker they want everyone in their tax bracket to also write a check to the government because that’s how maths works you fucking numpty.

Another grocery idea I think could work is a cooperative that dairy owners can buy into so they still own their business but can get cheaper wholesale together. We already have a network of dairies and having a store in walkable distance (even if more expensive) boosts liveability and access.

Here's the nub of the Listener column I wrote after going to the Maungawhau station "first look". The new network enabled by the CRL – the tracks that were almost torn up in the 1990s – will define the city for decades. www.nzherald.co.nz/the-listener...
A great deal has been said about service frequency once the CRL opens, and probably not enough about what you might call the Ikea factor. Depending on where you live in Auckland, reaching the retail icon can be an ordeal on the motorways. But once the new link opens, someone in Mt Albert will be able to board a train and simply stay on the East-West line to disembark at Sylvia Park station, passing under the central city on the way.

A public transport journey from Albany in the north to Manukau in the south or Swanson in the west will require just one change, from the NX1 bus to the East-West Line at Waitematā Station (formerly Britomart).

It may take a while for Aucklanders to get used to thinking about getting around their city in this way. But while they do, the rail tunnel under the central city will be helping to reshape Auckland itself. To the chagrin of some residents of Mt Eden’s leafy streets, Auckland’s Plan Change 120 allows for buildings of up to 15 storeys in the area around Maungawhau. Further west, the streets around Baldwin Avenue station, where there is barely a two-storey dwelling, may see 10-storey towers.

During the next few decades, many more of us will live near a railway station.

While much can be said about the car focus of North American cities, it makes for a much nicer pedestrian experience when you have priority for crossing, at any side streets and stop signs

This really annoys me and is not the first time they have parked here. They built these houses so, firstly, they should know this is a pedestrian path and no parking, and secondly, they could have designed parking or a loading zone if they want to be able to park near the units.
