Google's statement that it includes a watermark that can identify them as AI-generated is completely braindead as to how disinformation works. You think people spending literally three seconds to derail a discussion give a shit about that? This is so easy to abuse www.404media.co/google-earth...

Asked for comment, Google pointed 404 Media to a tweet the company posted on Thursday. “We take misinformation seriously – every image created with Nano Banana in Google Earth includes the SynthID digital watermark, so if someone is unsure about an image, they can ask the Gemini app or use Lens in Search to see if the image was AI-generated. In addition, we prevent image creation on harmful topics and are continually updating our protections,” it read.
This of course ignores the very obvious fact that plenty of people do not bother to verify themselves if an image is real or not. People spreading misinformation also often don’t care about eventually getting caught; they can cause a massive amount of damage to a certain conversation very quickly before anyone calls them out for their bullshit.

Why the f**k do we not classify the social media companies as “publishers”? They would then be subject to the existing law that makes a publisher responsible for what it publishes. It should not make any difference that what the social media companies publish is digital rather than ink on paper

Data point the Church of England might bear in mind. Of the three living Archbishops of Canterbury, two hold gay sex to be sinful, and have been disgraced for covering up sexual abusers of children. One signed a letter calling for a ban on conversion therapy for trans people and hasn't been.
