Went to visit my old friends, who I hear in my thoughts constantly, who are responsible for all that I have and all I have done, but who I never met. But I hear them clearly in all I do. (Sorry George for cursing you so much in grad school.)

LLMs only draw inferences and cannot create new premises. Humans learn & then AI applies, not otherwise. This is the first Hugging Face hack explanation I've read that explains the data from which AI agents drew references: Years of public, flag-capture hacking contests (incl. hacker shit-talking)

Ever wondered what a test card is for? TV signals are encoded in the YUV or YCbCr color spaces. A vectorscope is just the CbCr or UV part of the signal in 2D. Running a SMTPE test card through the scope gives you a zigzag pattern where it visits the center of each primary box in a specific order.
The SMTPE test card, electronically generated. An oscilloscope image with lines and boxes printed on the screen. The green lines of the oscilloscope are tracing out a pair of interlocking zigzags that exactly hit the centers of the boxes. Science!

"Some harm reduction advocates are annoying" isn't a serious policy analysis or prescription. Everyone wants to get homeless people off the streets. Harm reduction advocates want to get them into shelters and treatment, which works. Their opponents want incarceration, which doesn't.

Their internal software kind of sucked. Somehow along the way, the company became convinced that the problem was that all Von Neumann-style computers were WRONG.

Replaced a single cat5e cable with a cat6e and got a 4x bandwidth increase to that port. Lesson learned, looks like I'm going shopping and replace me some patch cables and bin the old ones.
Daily graph of bandwidth through one port on my network. Patch cable was replaced around 4pm, there is a 4x increase in bandwidth after that.

Every explanation at school where they dissect a human brain, they skip telling you that this is not how a brain looks - that's a fixed sample, drained of blood, bathed in formaldehyde turning it from soft red jelly into brown modelling clay, and slightly reducing the size in the process. Lies!

This is the ideal user interface. You may not like it, but this is what peak UX looks like.
A screenshot of the retro Amiga music tracker software OctaMED Professional v4.00 during active playback. The classic gray and black pixelated interface features a complex control panel at the top with various buttons for playback, file management, and instruments, showing a BPM of 125. The central area displays four vertical channels of scrolling alphanumeric musical data, showing notes like "F-2" and "C-3" alongside numeric values. Superimposed over this text data are four colorful, glowing vertical volume meters (ranging from green to red) and a dynamic pink waveform line, visually indicating the music is currently playing. At the very bottom, two small red bar-graph audio spectrum visualizers monitor the output.

How do you kill a Supercomputer?

(Accidentally) using radioactive solder is a good way.

IBM’s Blue Gene/L frequently crashed when running simulations at LLNL.

Turned out that alpha particles from the lead solder in the board carrier were slamming the L1 cache with bit flips.

It's fashionable to make fun of DJs as frivolous non-artists who just play other people's music. But sometimes the third space that clubs provide is desperately important, and the DJs guided journey through music is both ceremony and life.
