Bought a sledge hammer and a splitting maul from Ace Hardware to replace the 7 year old pieces that finally gave out today. The sledge lasted 5 strokes and split down the shaft, the maul maybe 15 minutes of use before the head came off. My dad had his axe for 40 years.

If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

Went to visit my old friends, who I hear in my thoughts constantly, who are responsible for all that I have and all I have done, but who I never met. But I hear them clearly in all I do. (Sorry George for cursing you so much in grad school.)

Never let hardware teams write software. We later found out that some of the PS3 demos, the ones that initialized opaquely from arrays, were intern code and their first ever programs in C. Software was an afterthought (e.g. that gcc compiler that was outsourced and never really pipelined correctly)

LLMs only draw inferences and cannot create new premises. Humans learn & then AI applies, not otherwise. This is the first Hugging Face hack explanation I've read that explains the data from which AI agents drew references: Years of public, flag-capture hacking contests (incl. hacker shit-talking)

If you want to get a head start learning a cutting-edge subject, read a PhD and catch the lecture. The person speaking really *knows* the subject, and making the significance of their breakthrough accessible to the layperson is their primary job.

Robin Green @fatlimey.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
There are 6 ways of producing a path of length 10: (0×2+10×1) = 10 steps (1×2+8×1) = 9 steps (2×2+6×1) = 8 steps (3×2+4×1) = 7 steps ... etc Next you need permutations of each one. 10 steps has 10!/(10-0)!=1 permutation. 9 steps has 9!/(9-1)!=9 perms 8 steps has 8!/(8-2)!=56 perms Etc

Quite a lot of the scattering in fur volumetric shadows is from diffraction around the hair strands. A lot more complicated than sums of random paths inside a medium, also frequency dependent.

It's an amazing design, just a few simple tweaks and you can get reliable timings from software kernels. With Bunnie's design you get very spongy "max spec" limits, which is fine in most situations but he did loosen the specs and drop video out.

Ever wondered what a test card is for? TV signals are encoded in the YUV or YCbCr color spaces. A vectorscope is just the CbCr or UV part of the signal in 2D. Running a SMTPE test card through the scope gives you a zigzag pattern where it visits the center of each primary box in a specific order.
The SMTPE test card, electronically generated.An oscilloscope image with lines and boxes printed on the screen. The green lines of the oscilloscope are tracing out a pair of interlocking zigzags that exactly hit the centers of the boxes. Science!

Between 102° and 105° depending on YUV or YCbCr - it also proves that melanin is a neutral density filter.

Traditionally, YCbCr vectorscopes (just the CbCr part) have this "skin tone" line marked on them to assist with video source normalization.

"Some harm reduction advocates are annoying" isn't a serious policy analysis or prescription. Everyone wants to get homeless people off the streets. Harm reduction advocates want to get them into shelters and treatment, which works. Their opponents want incarceration, which doesn't.
