Was just thinking—fried egg was also a print ad that ran for years, which is definitely a factor in how striking the image is in our collective memory, we who lived and read in the era of print. "Learned it by watching you" could only ever be memorable as a tv spot.

many people on this app are more invested in being seen as innocent of harm rather than improving themselves, organizing, and being held accountable for internalized bigotry if you are marginalized, you are not exempt from bigotry on axes where you're not marginalized. end of story.

So, like, if you wanna be an engineer, don’t you think maybe knowing a bit about the history of engineering would be beneficial? It’s so weird to me that people think “history” (or any discipline, really) is something set apart from what they do or how they live.

For a second-wave movement that built itself around consciousness-raising, Take Back the Night, and other *community based* work, this is disappointing. I get it, it's hard to see so much backsliding. But we need cross-generational solidarity right now, badly.

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

And when you do read it, have Elon Musk in mind every time Leland Stanford comes up. And think about the composition of groups represented in the novel and whether any of their "best interests" actually align with those of the monopoly capitalist.

Regular rec that everyone w/interest in American studies, history & politics read THE SQUATTER AND THE DON (1885) by María Amparo Ruiz de Burton. A perfect historical novel for talking about current conditions & asking the perennial American question, "Will we learn from our past history?"

Reading proofs from book & remembering what I wrote in 2015: "I am very concerned about the future of AI. Not because of the risk of rogue machines taking over. But because of the homogeneous, one-dimensional group of men who are currently involved in advancing the technology.”

we don’t teach young people short-term history, so it was weird when i realized that gen z had no idea that so many gen x and millennials spent our high school years protesting george w bush and not just because of the wars, but because mosques were being targeted and sikh men were being attacked

We’re gonna be uncovering just how criminal the 45 + 47 administrations were + are for the rest of most of our lives. We’re gonna have to look forward while digging through recent pasts. We’re gonna have some despair with our hope. I will not qualify any of this with an “if.”

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

I get really upset that, as a culture, Americans are artificially held back, prevented from becoming what we could become, all cuz some rich folks don’t wanna do actual labor for even the smallest thing they have & so use their ill-gotten wealth to stymie most everyone else’s imaginations.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

“Ending genocides is the only righteous reason to go to war” was—and I’m not kidding—maybe the single positive takeaway I got from my secondary US history education, which was taught to me by more than one Vietnam vet. It’s a fucking batshit silly time to be entering middle age fr fr.
