Text: Leo Tolstoy, The novelist learns to bicycle. The author of "War and Peace" took his first bicycling lesson at age 67, only a month after the death of his 7-year-old son, Vanichka. He was grieving, and the Moscow Society of Velocipede Lovers provided him a free bike and instruction along the garden paths on his estate. He became a devotee, taking rides after his morning chores. "Count Leo Tolstoy ... now rides the wheel," declared Scientific American in 1896, "musch to the astonishment of the peasants on his estate." A close friend noted: "Tolstoy has learned to ride a bicycle. Is this not inconsistent with Christian ideals?"

For Reasons I am using mapquest. Today I took a long ride to parts of Bronx and Manhattan I had never seen. It was was fine but the voice of the reader of speaker or whatever is close enough to Tony Curtis's imitation of Cary Grant in "Some Like it Hot" that I was giggling deliriously for 25 miles.

When I was little, the city was a much more dangerous place than it is now, but somehow everyone was allowed to walk in and out of City Hall Park with no ill effect. Even if one accepts the excuse for security gates, there is no possible excuse for having parked cars right in front.

HOLY SHIT. This is AMAZING news. They caught the guy who killed the man in my pinned post, Vietnamese immigrant Be Tran. His killer is a Romanian national who had torched his BMW upon killing Tran, fled to Europe where he did a bunch of crimes, did 3 years, then got nabbed.
