I don't see anything erratic here. For over a decade, Trump has prioritised "getting along with Russia"; since 20 January 2025, Trump administration policy has reflected that priority. It's perhaps the most consistent aspect of Trump foreign policy. 🧵on Trump and sanctions.

So I think this is purely pragmatic: give these things "personhood" and then avoid liability for the crimes they inevitably commit, such as hacking into third-party services (e.g., Hugging Face).

My guess is that it's because they don't actually know much about the world outside of America, and so you end up with Americanised takes on everything that isn't America. It's ironically a direct consequence of living in the world's singular superpower, being completely isolated from the world.

also like, as a pure rhetorical move, i really don’t think the supposed “defenders of the oppressed” have thought through what the implications of “human rights are liberal propaganda to hold us back” are if deployed in actual practice, because the phrasing could be a verbatim quote from Ben-Gvir

Yeah, at this point I just assume that -online- radical leftists are more or less Nazis but with red paint instead of brown. In real life it does tend to be a bit different in my experience, as a Turk interacting with (rare) Turkish communists, but online? Nah, it's just killpeopleism online.

In theory there may be people who obsess over “Zionists” controlling American politics who aren’t anti-Semites but at this point I pretty much assume anyone speaking this way is one step away at best from going full ZOG.

The phrase "procedure comes before substance" is relevant here. I don't know how often the phrase is used in American (or common) law but it's often cited in Turkish law, for good reason. "Just lock them up" is a can of worms you do not want to open, even for the best of intentions.

The fact that many of the executions and death sentences in Iran don't make headlines isn't because they have stopped. So far in 2026, the Islamic Republic has executed at least 1001 Iranians, including 41 in September. Currently, more than 100 people are facing the death sentence.

This is why the AKP cling to power, by the way. Westerners are quick to assume that they steal elections and suppress dissent, but they don't know that until very recently, AKP municipalities were incredibly responsive and quick to act. Foreigners (and sheltered Turks) have this impression...

Maybe art is a response to the times we are living through. Maybe the most-celebrated art is something that is both crafted with excellence and resonates with the moment. (To quote Brecht: "In dark times Will there also be singing? Yes, there will be singing. About the dark times.")

We have exterminated several diseases which claimed the lives of millions of humans prior to modern medicine. We, on average, live healthier and longer lives. We have solutions to dental problems that aren't just "yank it out." Fewer mothers die in childbirth. Yes, these are all technology.
