the hard parts of building a business are - solving a real problem for real people - ignoring shiny ideas that are fun but distracting - prioritizing boring stuff that moves the needle - connecting with customers if anything, AI makes it *harder* to build a successful business

Rip me. All the stuff about quantitatively measuring charity made sense to me. I don't agree with any of the speculation about future people's wants. Seems like everything past giving to existing charities was tacked on to justify not actually caring about people at all

You know what’s harder than performance optimization? …Deoptimization. It’s a pretty fun concept you use every day without realizing it. The *only* reason modern dynamic languages can “fly so close to the sun” is because they have a safety-net when they over optimize.

I finally updated Android Studio to a version that has LLM intellisense on by default. Surprised by how bad most of the suggestions are. Boggles my mind that vibe coding is a thing.

DAE say their ABCs frequently when they're coding? I'm always running into times when something needs to be in alphabetical order. Maybe it's a sign I'm not automating enough

As long as the LLM is just a chat, the damage that "hallucination" can do is limited. But basically Anthropic and OpenAI gave these models API interfaces and told them to go nuts, and now they are blaming the predictable outcomes of their dogshit security practices on superintelligence

It's hilarious that "the initial work and underlying philosophy of this massive defense-linked American industry came from a small group of sorta racist californians who were super into esoteric sex cultism" is not enough to pin down what industry you're talking about

Fiction: - AI will get smarter than people - Managers will then fire everyone and replace them with AI Reality: - Managers fired everyone preemptively, because they bought in to the fiction - AI never got smarter than people, but in the end they were just as fired as if it had

While working on a project, I paused a bit to style an icon + text. When the text is short, the icon is vertically centered. If the text wraps, the icon is aligned with the first line. ishadeed.com/article/alig... This is a result of using lh, aspect-ratio, height: auto, flexbox and more.
A screenshot from one demo shows controls for icon, font and list. In the middle, there is a checkmark icon next to "How to align an icon to a label".

Qatar Airways was voted the world’s best airline in 2025. Its booking site ranks 79th out of 111. Cathay Pacific, five stars, ranks dead last. I spent a while digging into why airline websites are so slow, and what the fast ones (Ryanair, Frontier) do differently. calibreapp.com/blog/airline...
Slope chart comparing Skytrax 2025 service ranking with Calibre's website performance ranking for the ten highest-rated airlines. Lines connect each airline's service rank on the left to its performance rank out of 111 on the right. Nearly all lines plunge downward: Qatar Airways drops from 1st to 79th, Singapore Airlines 2nd to 31st, Cathay Pacific 3rd to 109th, Air France 8th to 95th, Japan Airlines 9th to 106th. Only Hainan Airlines rises, from 10th to 6th.

I think the issue is that most programmers are not actually doing meaningful work for their employers. When I was told I had to use copilot to do part of my job I went “sure I’ll use this miserable tool for my miserable work”. I can see how that could fool people into taking the attitude further.

If your business processes are not simple and consistent with clear governance, then the most efficient approach is internal staffing. Not because it is efficient in itself, but because networking and institutional knowledge are your only hope at stopping things becoming too inefficient.

People say they’re too scared to talk about their use of AI on bsky, so they have to go to X to feel like they’ll be supported (which… gross). My take: stop talking about AI incessantly and start showing what you’re achieving — aka results. So tired of all talk no action.

The age of SPAs with client-side routing is dead. If you need client-side routing, you should use a fullstack framework that initially loads with SSR. If you don't need client-side routing, you should use HTMX or Datastar. SPAs should be limited to an app that's an actual real single page
