If people would just use MY preferred set of rules for micromanaging everything, none of this would be a problem!

Renewables also tried to make the “landowners should have freedom to use their land how they see fit” case but still ended up with some of the strictest land use restrictions against wind and solar in the entire world.

Unfortunately, it seems like the Edmonton infill multiplex world is about to find out what happens when the UCP turns its heat-seeking culture war lasers toward their frothing base’s enemy du jour. The ghost of the Alberta renewable energy industry sends condolences in advance.

it really is stark when you see it all laid out
Source: OpenStreetMap 2022, CER IPL Database, EIA U.S. Energy Atlas
Description: This map shows the high voltage transmission power lines in Canada that are over 100 kilovolts (kV) and high voltage transmission lines in the U.S. that are over 200 kV. Transmission lines link the following provinces to international markets: B.C. to the U.S. Pacific Northwest grid; Manitoba to the U.S. midcontinent grid; Ontario to the U.S. midcontinent and U.S. eastern grids; Quebec to the U.S. eastern grid; and New Brunswick to the U.S. New England grid. There are also power lines between Alberta to Montana and Saskatchewan to North Dakota.
The map also shows the 23 high voltage and extra-high voltage international power lines that are 230 kV and above at the Canada/U.S. border. International power lines, as regulated by the CER, are shown as a diamond shape on the map because they are relatively short in length. There is a list of 23 international power lines on the right side of the figure that spotlights where each international power line is on the map as many of the diamonds overlap each other. Note the map does not show all 86 international power lines. Lower voltage lines below 230 kV are not shown because of the overlap.

what happens to the young professional moving to portland and seeking housing if the major development doesn’t get built? some people think the young professional simply won’t move to portland actual reality: they move there anyway and outbid local guy or his neighbours for an older rental house

Any polling or surveys was done before people have actually lived through a winter under DST. People like DST in the summer, that’s clear enough. But I’m saying the downsides of it in winter are going to cause a lot of buyers regret on that choice.

I predict by February we'll have lots of articles featuring people across western Canada complaining about the lack of light in the mornings and how the little bit of extra light at 5pm isn't worth the tradeoff

The high cost of domestic air travel is already a drag on the Canadian economy. Privatization of airports will only weaken us further while introducing more of the problem we actually need to be addressing: the prevalence of rent seeking oligopolies in so many key sectors.

Ford also has the benefit of being the only right wing party running against strategically inept trio of parties to his left. But it’s true that his brand of conservatism leaves aside a lot of that culture war stuff that tears other parties apart. Except for the bike lanes of course.

And yes, your definition of the word mandate is stupid. You have a mandate if you have the power. That's it.

Trump has completely broken millions of Canadians' worldviews, all at once. You can't undo it by soberly reminding us that his approval rating is low, or with reassuring tales of future Dem presidents taking power peacefully in 2029 (do we ask about 2032?)

Evan Boyce @evanboyce.ca · 18/09/2026
Those bristling at the Canadian meaning of "mandate" haven't internalized the gravity of this for us. Having your existence threatened by the leader of the world's largest economic & military superpower changes everything. Most of you disagree with that? Ok, he still did it. Now what do we do?
130
Evan Boyce @evanboyce.ca · 18/09/2026
Doesn't matter that "only" 48% voted for him, or that his approval is "only" 30%, or that you're confident Pres Ossoff is gonna throw them all in jail in 2029. All that matters is how the massive country next door keeps talking about ending us. And he has the keys to it right now.

TIL Americans think mandate means landslide rather than just “winning power in a democratic election” and are very very mad about it

I’d be more willing to accept that it’s just about how we use this word differently if the weren’t multiple people in the replies, doubling down on “hurr Canada doesn’t get it or understand our politics”

“He didn’t win over 50% of the popular vote” umm okay? Did he win 100% of the executive power? As chosen by the American people through their democratic process? Does Kamala Harris have any involvement in the White House? Who’s on first?

incredible stuff here. I've noticed that the line 1 trains frequently miss their vinyl floor door markings, so this is the same basic problem. I thought upgraded ATC was supposed to allow trains to stop in the same place every time?

No idea what to make of this race so far. Erhahart is Fletcher's anointed successor with no clear policy differences, not super inspiring. Saxe, this is a silly move to pull and I doubt it works. Fragedakis, really? Who is the best housing candidate? Most posted platforms don't even mention zoning.

Unverified but if this is real, it’s a hilarious way to find out this information.
I texted the premier about 20 minutes ago and almost immediately got a call back from a private number. I recorded the whole call. He said that only 2% of the bike lanes are going to be coming out. I mentioned that Bill 60 says all of University, Bloor, and Avenue are coming out, and he said "no, it never said all the lanes".

This is a little ambiguous to me, because he may have been using 2% to mean 2% of all bike lanes in Toronto (which would explain why he said "it never said all the lanes"), whereas I was referring only to the three main roads mentioned in Bill 60.

He did however mention that it will only be a small portion of them near Royal York road being removed, that he is working with the mayor, and that we can expect to hear news about it within a week or so.

Should I send this conversation to any news companies or community members (biking lawyer/cycle toronto)? What the premier says to a random citizen isn't exactly legally binding lol but maybe it could be of interest?

Every subsequent U.S. president who tries to do a modicum of good via foreign policy or trade is going to be sitting across from someone thinking yeah sure, okay, but what about the next guy. Absent political reforms, tribunals and truth and reconciliation, that credibility is gone forever.

Most Albertans know, but the separatists want to be taken over by the US. They make hand-wavey efforts to pretend it's about independence but they're as MAGA as it gets and want in on it. They downplay it to try for votes from less hardline types who just want to "send a message to Ottawa".

I know many of us would like to see this but I expect oil is the very last lever the Feds will pull with Alberta separatism on a ballot in the next 2 months
