I could try to convince my parents to live my childhood dream of living in West Edmonton Mall! But yeah, Edmonton is a lot better urbanism-wise than it used to be... but still SO car dependant. And when I say car, I actually mean truck. Because basically no one in Alberta drives a regular car now...

Very pleased that the LRT is now being extended there! And mall shopping generally is a lot less popular than in WEM's heyday and it's getting emptier. I agree it would be brilliant to turn that land over to housing. Housing for older people would be great with the mall so accessible!

Sunbirds very forgivable. But as much as I'm loathe to admit this as a Londoner with no car who buys everything second-hand, I spent every boxing day at West Edmonton Mall from about 2001-2011 and there definitely was not enough parking! I cried! I watched fights break out!

Already a ton of Americans who have summer homes in Nova Scotia and such, though I think most of them are actually just from a little bit south of the border.

Yeah, I guess it's a matter of where you consider yourself living. If you've spent your whole life in Texas, and you go to Cape Cod all summer, that really is the reverse of a snowbird. And I suspect that will become more common?

(or urban dictionary is making up things that don't really exist which is relatively common... but still!)

Curious to hear @jonnelledge.bsky.social use the term 'sunbirds' in his new book. In Canada, I've only ever heard 'snowbirds' for people going south for the winter but apparently 'sunbirds' are people doing this in the opposite direction according to urban dictionary? Fascinating.

While one of my favourite quotes about my home nation is Naomi's Klein's 'Canadian smugness is a powerful drug', all these EU/Canada memes have reminded me what a privilege it is to come from a country that people just generally feel so positive towards.

A side issue, but the thing that is always cited is “gas prices” and — I know I always say it — but we won’t make any global progress on climate change until Americans get used to paying *a lot more* for petrol. Have you looked at British petrol prices any time recently? Now double them.

“Both Russian and pro-Trump U.S. actors are amplifying and spreading misinformation about Alberta separatism in the hope of fraying Canadian unity and sowing distrust.” An overt attack on Canadian sovereignty, meant specifically to manipulate Canadians. That’s what’s fuelling Alberta separation.

Russia and U.S. amplifying Alberta separatist narratives to stoke division, distrust: report | CBC News
Moscow has long tried to meddle in foreign elections. What's newer is Canada's neighbour overtly trying to influence and fan flames of referendum bid, warns a new report on foreign interference.

Oh, that thing where they're giving a bunch of work experience places instead of actually employing people... good job Sainsbury's! 🙄

Not entirely relevant here, but is he cosplaying as Sainsbury's employee in this picture?

Maybe I read The Power Broker too recently, but I am hoping that someone, somewhere is writing some fan(?) fiction in which Robert Moses and Zohran Mamdani exist at the same time. Can you imagine the disdain Moses would have? Take him down, Zohran.

One of your sisters and I did teacher training together, and as an only child I remember having fascinating discussions at the time about what these differences looked like and, to this day, it's the saddest thing to me about not having siblings – the lack of collective memories!

I've been trying to hand-pollinate my pumpkin plant because it's not producing any fruit but it turns out it's also only producing male flowers so I'm really just pushing homosexuality on it but it continues to produce male flowers so clearly it likes it.

I see the Thanksgiving release because American marketing is always, "after thanksgiving it's Christmas" but yeah, the streaming at Christmas bit makes sense. But the theatre spelling makes no sense because even if they're just going "Brits know when thanksgiving is" they'd still say cinemas...

Emily Turner @etwritehome.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
Could be a Canadian poster? That would use the 'theatre' and Thanksgiving, but then it would be coming out in early October which doesn't make any sense...

There was an album for Amnesty International of Dylan covers that came out maybe a decade or two ago that was SO GOOD. It was a three or four part album and I loved every song on it. Need to go back to listening to that!

I grew up in the suburbs of Edmonton and didn't even know universities WERE ranked. The guidance counsellor had never heard of Dalhousie when I said I wanted to go there because it was just assumed everyone would attend U of A or MacEwan. Particularly out west, people just go to the commuter one!

Keir Starmer’s speech on nudity apps encapsulates much of Labour’s MPs frustration with him. “Ultimatums” rather than action. Talk big, act small. Perhaps you then eventually do act big but not without losing an awful lot of goodwill in the process.

As a London musical theatre fan, the mincefluencers are a force to be reckoned with. There's people who have seen it 100+ times – my meagre 4 is nothing! But I'm glad to see the devoted fandom has come to America as well – it's totally deserved.
