If enough of you started posting to Mastodon, I would absolutely be exclusively posting over there. I don't know how many "enough of you" would be. Less than 100%. I do know what this says about my continued use of this website.

As someone who likes to think he can spot a joke, I'm inclined to forgive the Bluesky masses for this one. Make it like 20% less coherent, only in English, and drop the last line, and I'd believe it.

Hot take: Voyager figured out how to do its Borg episodes right. "Unity" was good, "Scorpion" was great, and then they flung the ship 10,000 ly to avoid having to keep doing Borg stories. But it was so (relatively) popular. They couldn't. They couldn't stop. God, "Dark Frontier" was so bad.

engagement-driven monetisation and gamification systems like gacha are everywhere in games. they have had real material negative impacts in genres i enjoy. they are a massive chunk of the market now. yes, i cant "undo" it. but i have been able to avoid them easily by just playing other games

the "you can't avoid AI, it's in all software now" argument might be true for infrastructure, where we have limited agency over the platforms and systems that make up our society, but is hilariously untrue for video games, a completely optional and easily ignored part of all of our lives

I wonder if I should delete my Dreamwidth account. After saving anything worthwhile I might have written, of course. (I also wonder if I should delete my Bluesky account for largely the same reasons, so, it might not happen any time soon.)

I think the underlying argument is "there's neither artistry nor craftsmanship in coding", and if that's how you feel, go nuts, I guess?

This analogy extends to me understanding why someone without access to a bed would do this! But you should help them get a real bed, not nod and go "yep, good on you for using this amazing bed alternative!"

"'A bunch of foam stuffing you found out on the curb, piled into the corner of your bedroom' is not 'a bed'." "Um, you can sleep on it? And it's probably not full of bugs if you're as discerning as I am!" This is a post about AI coding.

ultimately if your reaction to someone saying "I think this is bad, I am ethically unhappy about it, I don't want to touch it" is to go "well it's useful so. it's everywhere. nothing to be done" I just kind of think you're an asshole

If you think something is harmful, the harmful does not stop when it's ubiquitous. It just means the harm is vast and widespread. I fundamentally do not care how useful you think it is.

Listen, if you're going to live in a house, it's just going to have asbestos in it. The asbestos works, folks. If you're going to draw the line at "no asbestos in anything" you're going to have to live in a yurt

I'm beginning to suspect that Lorne Michaels is personally aggrieved that one of his picks for SNL had to be fired over a little harmless bigotry, and he's going to make it the show's and the network's problem until he turns to dust.

Edited 4 panel comic of Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin's dad approaches Calvin and says "playing internet slang? I'll show you something interesting"
"The two types of slang are Nazi and AAVE. All slang falls into these two categories. Rizz? AAVE. Chad? Nazi"
Calvin responds "yeah"
Calvin's dad continues 'serving cunt? AAVE. -Maxxing? Nazi. Despite being actually funny, -slop is nazi"

The final panel shows Calvin, eyes wide as he struggles to sleep.

Honest answer: knowing that it's you, and knowing you care about both doing it right and about the perception, no, it wouldn't bother me. If I stumbled across it randomly ... I couldn't say for sure. Kind of like the brain twinge I get when a human-made flyer uses art/fonts that AI loves to copy.

No single survey is a definitive benchmark for sexual identity. Among adults these estimates vary considerably from survey to survey. This is one wave with a response rate of about 31%. There is a change that deserves study, but “free fall” does not describe it.

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.
