Showed the abstract to my wife, who rolled her eyes so hard at the idea we needed a trial to find out we should give more pain control when placing #IUDs. She was even more shocked to see this was only just published in #JAMA. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Intrauterine Mepivacaine Instillation vs Placebo for Pain During IUD Placement
This randomized clinical trial assesses whether intrauterine instillation of mepivacaine reduces pain and improved tolerability during intrauterine device placement in nulliparous individuals.

the fact that the NTSB is conducting a federal safety investigation of the helicopter crash, but nobody is going to do anything about the original deadly car crash, really shows just how few fucks our country gives about every day traffic violence that kills 40k people every year

I often refer people to #hospice (normal in #geriatrics). If Oz wanted people on hospice to get palliative chemo or dialysis he could change the Medicare rules. He could make hospice facilities a thing so family caregivers aren't so overworked! What on earth is he wasting time on?

Thank you, @uclahealth.org for sharing my work! It's exciting that potentially important data on health and immunity are hidden in a TB test we routinely order. I hope this opens up new ways to study the immune system at a population level. www.uclahealth.org/news/release...

Data hidden in tuberculosis screening tests sheds light on patients’ overall mortality
Scientists have long known that the immune system plays a key role in aging. As people age, they have weaker responses to vaccination, greater risks of infection and higher levels of inflammation. A n...

Still are! Japanese uses 2-3k characters now, down from 5k before the US instituted language reform (and about how how many Chinese uses).

You're very kind thank you! It can be a lot of fun, if also a huge source of headaches when they're not phonetic!

Benjamin Seligman @errorbars.bsky.social · 20/04/2026
It's still a pain 😅 Though when I look at older Japanese writing I realize how much easier it is now.

Benjamin Seligman @errorbars.bsky.social · 20/04/2026
It's easier when they're phonetic! Chinese characters are kind of necessary in Japanese, but they sometimes get in the way of figuring out unfamiliar words.

Japanese! It was meant to be a child's first novel, which definitely helped compared to when I've tried to read other novels in Japanese and got slowed down by unfamiliar characters.

I get that this is related to demand (the men's final isn't on there for a reason). Still, the Olympics are about bringing out the best in athletics and sexism doesn't fit with that.

Lucky enough to get tickets to #LA28. The price gap between men's and women's Olympic #basketball events is a chasm. It's not much better for other sports.
Tickets to men's and women's Olympic basketball games. Prices for the women's bronze medal game start at $106, while men's bronze game starts at $508. The women's final starts at $636.

ALL drugs are potentially unsafe. A rule of thumb in #geriatrics is that a new patient problem is likely from a new medication. It could be an interaction, it could be issues with drug metabolism. Many problems are better-address without medications at all. Prescribing is key to patient safety.

The story of Prontosil (an early antimicrobial) gives some idea: the inventor's daughter accidentally stabbed her arm with a knitting needle and the wound got infected. He was able to get her the drug and she was cured. Otherwise, her arm would have been amputated. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard...

Not so random: the idea was to clear senescent cells, which release signals that inhibit regeneration (maybe including synthesis of prostaglandin E2). Senolytics are still a pretty active area of work, just didn't pan out in this case.

Let it not be lost on us that the flu season is real, real bad the year that the administration fucked around with the flu vaccine committee and decided not to cooperate with international disease experts. Stark cause and effect, and it's only going to get worse if we let RFK continue his work.
