A couple of photos of DH Mosquito TE881 engine runs back on Oct 9th. I don't think they are needing to do weekend work so I am unlikely to get lucky when I visit Ardmore tomorrow. #AvGeek #Aviation nzcivair.blogspot.com/2026/10/mosqu…

Mosquito ZK-WEL/TE881 Out for Engine Runs at Ardmore
The fifth DH 98 Mosquito to be completed by Avspecs, **ZK-WEL 2** (c/n TE881), was wheeled outside on 9 October for engine runs and _AgairNZ_ was there to photograph it: **ZK-WEL 2 **is a FB Mk VI model and it was registered to Avspecs on 29/4/25. This Mosquito is destined for Fly a Spitfire at Biggin Hill in England and its history is detailed on their website HERE. I understand that it will be used for warbird experience flights by Fly a Spitfire alongside their fleet of two 2 seat Spitfires and a Mustang. I had expected Fly a Spitfire to have announced the good news so I will just post these two photos for now. Both engines were successfully run during the test on 9 October. It has since undergone more finishing work and will soon be out for more engine runs. Thanks for the photos Wayne.

Turns out this is very likely a Junkers W34 from Port Alberni Airways or Canadian Airways. PAA was bought by Pacific Western Airlines. The lineage of airlines ends with Ward Air, which was bought by Air Canada in the 1980s. So in a way, this would have been one of the first, and only, stops by […]

Hey #AVGeeks! Anyone know what this 1930s era floatplane might be? The picture appeared in this weeks edition of the Alberni Valley News. The float plane is on the waters of Sproat Lake around 1938. It is a single-engine, possibly a Canadian military aircraft […] [Original post on socialbc.ca]
A screenshot shows the float plane. It is a low-winged plane with floats attached to the bottom with a number of spars and supports. The plane has a single tail and the cockpit is slightly back from the large single propeller, which is still spinning in the photo. A man is standing on the wing with one foot appearing to be in the cockpit on the starboard side of the plane. The water under the plane is quite calm with just ripples and waves from the plane itself. In the background is a treed shoreline with fir trees and a large mountain ridge to the right obscured by mist and fog but with snow visible on the top portions of the ridge. The photo is black and white.

I’m currently on a 2,500mi road trip in an EV and as I recharge, I spend $5-$20 on water and snacks at every stop. I wonder what the local economic impact is for EV chargers and why every gas station and convenience store in America doesn’t already have chargers to capture those snacking drivers.
Yes I hate that Tesla chargers are the most numerous and fastest charging, Tesla needs more competition.

Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 Bachstelze at Deutsches Museum, Munich. A folding autogiro for U-Boats which wasn't useful in practice. #AvGeek #Aviation
A very simple engine-less autogyro hanging from a museum ceiling. A dummy is strapped in ahead of the rotor mast.FLYING LOOKOUT
Within just a few minutes, the crew could assemble the engineless gyrocopter Bachstelze (wagtail) on the deck of a German submarine. Attached to the U-boat with a rope, its pilot was expected to observe enemy ships up to 50km away, which would be attacked by the U-boat. As the U-boat gained speed, the pilot would climb aboard the fragile aircraft.
The airstream propelled the rotor blades and carried the Bachstelze up to a height of 200m, like a kite on a string.
When the Bachstelze went into service in 1943, allied anti-submarine systems and air superiority had already made patrols extremely risky for German U-boats. Their captains would often prohibit the use of the “flying eye”. In the event of danger, they would have been forced to cut the cable and leave the pilot stranded on the high seas.
