The first copies of Algorithmic Realism: Data Science Practices to Promote Social Justice have arrived! It's pretty surreal to hold a physical copy after years of staring at Word docs and PDFs. The book comes out next week, so get your preorders in now! mitpress.mit.edu/978026205570...

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

I am not joking when I say this. Most of the things genAI purports to “solve” are not in fact “problems.” Some are in fact crucial social and personal goods. Does a life sentence in prison “solve” the problem of “permanent constraint on your personal mobility”? I guess? If you run a prison?

So many are feeling this way, and of course being sad that something you value and think is important is being devalued does not mean that you are "pretending AI doesn't exist" it means you are, in fact, grappling with it. I think many students are sad too because meaningful work is...meaningful.

But the mania for unreliable AI and the indifference of tech leaders to democratic backsliding shows that the real danger is evaluating everything in terms of how much money it will make. When scientific truth and moral principles are expendable for that goal, the aesthetic doesn't stand a chance.

Trystan Goetze (they/them/theirs) @errantcanadian.com · 10/09/2026
But it's also true of so much else in society today. Perhaps scientism prepared us for utility-Philistinism by thoroughly disenchanting the world. Certainly there is a formal similarity between breaking everything down into technical categories and models and judging value on economic criteria alone
110
Trystan Goetze (they/them/theirs) @errantcanadian.com · 10/09/2026
That's, again, especially true of games. The layoffs at Microsoft this year are a case in point: whether those developers made good games, from a technical or aesthetic standpoint, seems irrelevant. What seems to matter is maximizing the wealth of the shareholders. Games are just a means to that end

Trystan Goetze (they/them/theirs) @errantcanadian.com · 10/09/2026
That third lens for thinking about games or anything in human experience is that of economic utility. I worry that its extreme form, the utility-Philistinism that now dominates a lot of major decisions, poses a greater threat to the good, the true, and the beautiful than scientism.

Trystan Goetze (they/them/theirs) @errantcanadian.com · 10/09/2026
Fascinating to use games as something obviously both technical/scientific and aesthetic to highlight that duality in other areas of experience. There's a third lens for looking at games or anything else, though, and one I think is where the danger lies. 🧵 #philtech #sts #gameStudies

Whenever someone says something like "We must use AI or we'll be left behind," I think: "But where are those people going?" Sometimes it makes sense to race to get to that destination first. Sometimes the destination is a good one, but there's no need to rush. Sometimes the destination is hell.

The book is challenging in a way that encourages you to look for patterns of deeper meaning. But it is also challenging in that it could be much more straightforward about what's going on at any given point in the narrative. Very worth reading but not an instant classic, for me. [4/4]
