Primate Profile #100: Proboscis monkey Arguably the weirdest monkeys on the planet: multi-chambered stomachs and chewing cud allow cellulose digestion; webbed fingers and toes make them excellent swimmers; and they choose mates by nose size! Images: J van der Meulen, W Yau & S de Win (iNat.org)
Adult male in a tree alarm calling. Proboscis monkeys are orange on most of the body, with grey forearms and legs. Their distinguishing feature is the nose: males have a large flabby nose that hangs over the top of their mouth. The face is framed by large white cheek pouches to make their head and shoulders look bigger. They have very large pot bellies, containing their multi-chambered stomachs.2 female proboscis monkeys, apparently playing (though I'll admit I don't actually know what they're doing), stood on their back feet nose to nose. Unlike male proboscis monkeys, females have noses which are still long, but upturned like snouts rather then hanging down like a floppy potato.A female proboscis monkey mid-free-fall (probably between trees, but could be leaping into water -- there is no visible background to tell), with an infant clinging to her neck. She has spread out all 4 limbs to slow her descent, and her tail is streaming out above her.

In this image is a quote from a microgrant recipient, a PhD student from Columbia studying in the United States. It reads: 'I am so grateful with the microgrant. In that moment, I was in need to change my car brakes and my savings were not enough. As an international student I am not allowed to work outside of the university, which makes my economic life very difficult because I am in one of the programs with the lowest payment for grad students of the country. Added to that, the town has no public transportation system, which makes a car one of the most important items in daily life and thanks to you, I could keep driving to school safely with the brakes changes.'This image reads: We rely on donations to support students. Consider making a one-off donation or signing up as a monthly backer! Next funding round opens: September 21st 2026.
