When I was little, the U.S. military came to our home at gunpoint and took me and my family away. We were imprisoned for years in barbed wire camps simply because we were Japanese American. I have spent my life telling that story, hoping it would never be repeated.

This poster, 1938, was printed by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio to encourage Americans to welcome Jewish refugees from Germany & Austria. More info in ALT. I couldn’t track down the name of the artist. #arthistory #illustration #immigration #immigrants #Refugees
A poster depicting Mary holding Baby Jesus as she rides a donkey. Behind them, on foot, Joseph looks back, perhaps to see if they are being followed. You will find story of The Flight Into Egypt in the Gospel according to Matthew 2:13-15: ‘After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.”’ ~ New Living Translation

From the website Facing History & Ourselves: “In 1939, 83% of Americans were opposed to the admission of refugees. In the midst of the Great Depression, many feared the burden that immigrants could place on the nation’s economy…

While economic concerns certainly played a role in Americans’ attitudes toward immigration, so too did feelings of fear, mistrust, and even hatred of those who were different. Immigration policies were shaped by fears of communist infiltrators and Nazi spies. Antisemitism also played an important role in public opinion.”

Were Jesus, Mary and Joseph refugees? In today’s Feast of the Holy Family, we read of Jesus, Mary and Joseph fleeing the murderous designs of an evil king and journeying to Egypt, a traditional refugee for Jewish people of the time, as Joan Taylor points out in her book “Boy Jesus.”

The Ninth Window. The Doctor and Grey Brock knocked on the door at half-past seven, and were welcomed in by Old Fox for a quick repast of eggs and toast and potato cakes and plain cake and coffee. Afterwards, feeling ready for the task, they made their way through the snow to the Great Woods to cut the tree for the cottage's Christmastide. It was very cold and very still, the air smelt of woodsmoke and village breakfasts, and two buzzards were calling and wheeling over the dark trees and the frozen fields.
What fun it was! Joyously, reverently, full of gladness, they heaved the broad spruce along the lane, the resin scenting their gloves, its branches still weighted with snow, Wolf and Grandcub galloping up and down beside them, and the Elderly Squirrel coming out to offer encouragement.
Babcia and Pine Marten quickly opened gates to smooth their passage, and after a pause for breath and jokes, they rounded the back of the cottage, everyone laughing and slipping and chatting excitedly, past the rosemary bushes, through the garden door and into the high beamed Drawing room, which was really the Old Hall from when it was the Manor House many centuries ago.
One, two, three, and they pulled the magnificent Spruse of Christenmass into position, between the fireplace and the tall stained glass windows, Old Fox having readied everything beforehand, and stood back together in admiration. The lovely early medieval room with its spread of 1930s comforts, cocktails and cigarette boxes and gramophone records, had suddenly changed, there was a wildness there, a wodewosenness, a green, pagan thrill which spoke of ancient things, of high glittering stars and the gyres of falcons wild and a king tangled in thorn and ivy, deep in the unending forest of Albion.

On Aug 24, 1869, Ohio Rep. John Bingham, principal framer of the 14th amendment, gave a remarkable speech on “Equal Rights-Impartial Suffrage,” in which he said of those who sought to reject the principal of birthright citizenship, “no greater political atrocity than this can possibly be committed.”
What is necessarily implied in this declaration of the Democratic Party? 1. That citizenship is not a birth-right, and from this it results that the majority may rightfully, in the several States of this Union, deprive the minority of all the privileges and immunities of citizens of the United States.
I submit that no greater political atrocity can possibly be committed by human agency.
Let the people accept this proposition and they will become the architects of their own ruin. Nothing can be clearer than this, that under the representative system of government the rights of the minority are as sacred and inviolable as the rights of the majority. If the majority may rightfully disfranchise the minority of citizens on account of race, color or former condition of servitude, they may, with equal propriety, disfranchise citizens for want of stature or property, or on account of nativity, thereby, presenting to teh world the miserable spectacle of a government wherein a mere majority subjects to the absolute despotism of their will a minority of their fellow citizens, almost equal in number to themselves, and per chance, greatly superior in all the attainments and virtues which adorn, or elevate, or ennoble human nature.
